PAGE FOUR BEDFORD MATE TRTBHSTE. MEDFORP. OREGON,- STTyDXY, OCTOBER 2, -1938, m SOCIETY tAND CL UB MEIVS OF THE WEEK jjaTP J By CLARA MART DAVIS VJ Tuesday Evening Song Recital Was Enjoyable Event . The song recital given by tour pupils of Mr. May Jordan Mac Donough. at the Flnt M. E. chucrch lat Tuesday evening, waa enjoyed by most appreciative audience which responded with unstinted applause. The singers were Eleanore Poffen barger Norton, Juanlta, Demmer, Ma vis Nichols and Olaf Severson. Jr. Eleanore Norton 1 one of Medford'e real artists, her clslm to that title resting not alone on her beautiful voice but equally on her understand lng of dramatic values, as evinced In her handling of Liszt's famous "Lorelei" and the impassioned "O. D1- Tlne Redeemer," by Gounod. Starting four years ago with leas than an octave of real, musical tones, she has Increased her range from low T to high O, si perfectly produced with ample volume. Remembering that she la only a little psst nine- Teen, one may well look forward with Interest to the added beauty ttast coming years will bestow. Another striking Illustration of what conscientious study under an experienced teacher will do la found In Juanlta Demmer performance of Tuesday evening. Having early been told that she bad no singing voice. me accepted the verdict and re. Trained from vocal endeavor until three years ago when a friend per. uaded her to take up singing ai relaxation from her teaching. Notwithstanding her reputation for aruccessruiiy carrying through what ane undertakes, the result In this. her first public appearance, amazed and delighted her friends. From a jimited range and quite unmusical ' tones, she has developed a, voice of considerable promise, of good timbre. sunpie range and volume, which she . uses with Intelligence and feeling. Continued study and experience will undoubtedly make her a singer to po rocaonea wun. It la a hsppy coincidence that Mavis Nichols bears the name of one or tne sweetest singing birds of uia Old World, for Mavla, who has Just jnoora ner inieenui birthday, gives premiss of becoming one of the tweetest singers of the new one. Her Jiolce is a real soprano with a natural range that older singers often attain only by arduous work, an unususlly beautiful one for a girl of her age Though as yet only a beginner, her ringing was a delightful surprise to nci uuicnce. . Olaf Sever son's songs were well dons and most enjoyable, sung with good expression, pure tone and entire bsenee of strain even In the highest register. His voice la pleasing and tola pianissimo work RnjM.iBii - In his second group, "For You," by Csdman, "The Seoret," Scott, and "Jean," by Sproes, he was at his best. V. S. W. V.
