former Medford resident and son of

transferred by the United Air Lines
from Chicago to Oakland. Cel., where

said to be a part of a new align
ment of administrative functions In

Enlists In Navy Tentative ac
ceptance of Cyril H. Albert for en
listment In the U. S. navy waa an
nounced today by George E. Patter
son, chief petty officer In charge of
this recruiting district. Albert, son
of Mrs. Mary Albert of 937 South
Holly street, will leave by train Mon
day evening for Portland where he
will be given 'hie final physical ex
amination. If he Is approved, he will
go Immediately to San Diego for
three months of preliminary training
before being assigned to actual duty.
Albert Is a graduate of Medford high
school and Is popular in the city's

yesterday afternoon's storm In the
forest areas and It was assumed that
rain was sufficiently heavy to ex
tinguish any possible strike. Rain
haa not been sufficiently heavy enough
yet to remove fire hazards and re
strictions are stlU In force In the
forests, Rogue River national forest
headquarters said today. Some of
the lookouts In the higher altitudes,
however, have been recalled and some
of the other members of the pro
tective staff have been granted ahort
leaves of absence. Care with fire
waa atlll urged and it was empha
sised that permits are atlll required
for any turning.

ed by bullets frm the same pistol.
Dowllng's brother, Tom, & retired
police patrol driver, shot and killed
his sister-in-law. Mrs. Anna Dow

and then fired a shot Into his own

CorasAa said Tom Dowllng had
been drinking heavily for some time.
and that he feared Mrs. Dowllng waa
taking steps to have him committed

REPLACEMENTS IN
WASHINGTON. Sept. 39. m The
civilian conservation corps announced
today state directors had been or
dered to select 49.497 men between
October 1 and October 30 ' to fill
vacancies.
Director Robert Fchner said this
waa about 78 per cent of the num
ber required to bring the CCC to Its
maximum strength of 300,000.
He aald the labor department re
ported there would be about 235,000
applicants for enrollment during Oc
tober. He estimated not more than
a fourth of this number could be
taken.
