Mlas Carol o Lombard, who startled
the U. 8. treasury and most of her
Bollywood conferees by revealing she
paid 85 Vj per oent of her $465,000 In
come last year In taxes, instated to
day she had made no mistake In her
calculations, as charged In Washing
ton dispatches,
, "X gave the federal government 65
per cent of my wages last year, and
I was glad to do It, too," she said. "I
gave the state Income tax ool lector
12 per cent and I handed the person

per cent. That makes 85', per cent
and frankly I don't see what all the

Miss Lombard said she paid 9397,
875 In taxes. That left her 967.425,
from which she had to pay her agent,

"So my net Income was 130.000.'
she said. "It was plenty for me. I
don't need any more."

SALEM. Aug. 26. (UP) Claiming
the measure will result In a pyra
mided sales tax, the Oregon Business
and Investors corporation of Port
land filed objections late yesterdiw
to the citizens' retirement annuity
bill which will appear on the gen
eral election ballot In November.
The bill, Initiated by petition, was
designed to raise money for old ago
pensions through a two per cent tax
on the gross dollar value of all trans
actions In the stato.
"It la a monstrous sales tax, a
sales tax on a sales tax, a pyramid
ing super-sales tax," said the ob
jections which wilt be published In
the voters' pamphlet.
"It Is not a simple retail sales
tax such aa Washington and Cali
fornia have. It Is a two per cent
tax on every conceivable kind of salts
or transaction, from the two per cent
tax on the doctor's fee for bringing
your child into the world, to the
two per oent tax on the undertaker
charges for service and material."
The objectors said the plan might
cost Oregon $80,766,400 a year, more
than all the cities, counties and tht
state Itself now raise through taxes.
