MEDFORD MATT, TRIBUNE, MEDFOTiU. ORE&Oy, THURSDAY. ATOtTST 25, 1938. PACJfi FTfB WOMAN IS GUD SHE HACKED OFF HANDWITH AXE Relief Felt After Mutilation Refuses to Reveal 'Sin' for Which Deed Atoned Husband Is Liberated Mother And Daughter Die On Railroad Crossing By ROBERT F. WH.COX (United Pi" "toff rorreponrtfht) MERCED, Cal., Aug. 25. 1 UP) Mentally alert and apparently un conscious of pain, Mrs. Ola Irene Harwell 36, today said she waa "glad she had followed the dictates of a virion" by gouging out her left eye with a pair of aclsnors and hacking off her right hand with a heavy chopping ax. "I feel relieved now," said the woman who came here with her 30-year-old husband, Woodrow, and two small sons from the dustbowl re gions of Oklahoma and Texas four months ago. Two hours after she mutllRted her self during a family prayer session last night, physicians said she ap psrently suffered no shock While they worked over her, she described what had taken place. Sin Not Revealed Because her eye and her hand had sinned, she severed them, Mrs, Har well explained. ' "I knew the time would come some day. When the moment of the su preme test came. I did not hesitate," she said. She would not reveal what the "sin" was. After the evening meal. Mrs. Har well and her husband gathered their two small sons about them In their one room cabin for the nightly read' Ing of the bible. After praying, Mrs. Harwell an nounced she had a vision and was going tot cut off her arm. Her hus band attempted to dissuade her. They walked out to the woodshed after she had picked up a pair of scissors. Mrs. Harwell asked her hus band to cut off her arm. He refused and returned to the cabin. Mr. Harwell gouged out her ye with the scissors. Then she placed her hand against a slab of concrete and swung three times with the axe. Her hand fell to the floor. With the aid of her husband but still In full possession of her mental faculties she returned to the house. Mid. her clothing and body soaked with blood, lay down on the bed. Help Summoned After praying for two hours, Har well sent the oldest of the two boys. who were Mrs. Harwell's by a pre vious marriage, to a neighbor's house for help. Btate Highway Patrolman Curtis Farr was summoned. Parr brought the woman to a hos pital, where physicians removed frag ments of her shattered eye and am putated her arm near the elbow. When newspapermen were per mitted to see her she talked cheer fully and freely. Harwell was taken Into custody and questioned. He was released after officials said bis wife's story exone rated him. Police described the family as typi cal of the hundreds of itinerants who have come to California from the dust bowl sections of the mid dle west. Reese Creek REESE CREEK, Aug. 35. (SpJ.) Re, w. E.
