OF SELLING ANTS Paul Lehman Captures Busy Little Insects by Thou sands for Scientists and Amusement Factories ONTARIO, Ore, Aug. 10. (8pl.) Although uU are the musa of much worry to most picnickers, they have proved a meant of Income for Paul Lehman, who llvej aouthweat of On tario. Mr. Lehman captured ants by the thousands for entomologists and amusement factories which frequent ly send orders for five or ten thou sand of the small Insects. Last week Mr. Lehman received a rush order for flvs thousand ants to be shipped by slrmall to a laboratory In New York City and to add to the difficulties of tripping fna Insects, they bad to be counted, all five thou sand of them, before the shipment wss made. The counting required several hours, ha said. Mr. Lehman has found the study of anta to be an Interesting hobby. "They have their armies, workers and a system of constructing their homes, and they even get drunk once In awhile,' he reported. Although there are approximately seven thousand known species, the harvester and the hunter ants are tic most common In this vicinity. The harvesters gather nothing but pebbles and the seeds from grain and weeds which they store In their chambers for use the following win ter. They are strictly vegetarian while the black ants are hunters and cap ture other Insects for their food. "Volumes that would fill every lib ary In this section of the country have been written concerning ants and their habits and there Is still that much more to learn about them," Mr. Lehman said. - Resides trapping ants In his spare time, Mr. Lehman operates the musk rat farm southwest of Ontario. Mr. Lehman Is a brother-ln-lsw of Thomas Hatlett, formerly of the An telope district, who now assists In the ant Industry, Dse Mall Tribune Want Ads. Stennetts Visit Carson City Smallest Capital In Country; Enjoy Mineral Relic Exhibit RENO, Ncv., Aug. 17. (Spl. Cor respondence) The writer and ' wife drove from Reno yesterday to the quaint little city, of Carson, known as the smallest state capital city In the United State. The distance ii S3 miles from Reno, with a well -paved highway winding through a valley with green, prosperous looking ranches on both sides of the highway. Carson City Is a town of 2000 population, nestling among a mass of large trees. Many of the homes are practically new, large and mod ern, yet there are ' numerous old homes of the pioneer type still standing and occupied by families. We visited the little stone state capltol building and viewed the many cases of mineral exhibits and Indian relics, all of which were presented to the state by Dr. 8. L. Lee, an emi nent pioneer physician and surgeon, who died at Carson City In 1027 at the age of 83. Dr. Lee devoted his life to gathering this collection of stones and Indian relics at an esti mated cost of 940,000. The stones are all polished, classified and label ed. It Is claimed to be the finest Individual collection ever assembled and no price could buy them from the state. Across the street from the state capltol is the new supreme court and library building. It Is a hand some structure built from Nevada stone excavated at the state prison, about two miles from the city. The old government mint, a large structure. Is near by, but now un used and offered for aale. We next visited the state print ing house and met our old friend, Joe Farosworth. state printer. Joe j has held the office for 16 successive years and the opposition party has quit putting up a candidate against htm. Farnswortb Invited ti3 to make : the trip to the state prison In bis car. When we arrived there the guard said he thought we were too late to go through, the prison, but when Joe appealed to the warden he said: "Hell, yes. we'll take your webfoot friends through and show them everything we have got.' A strapping big accommodating at tendant was supplied and hs piloted us through the entire building and pointed out the bad ones among the 104 prisoners. We were shown the gallows where they used to hang them, then the spot where they later used to shoot the convicted murderers, and finally the gas house, the latest Innovation, where ten murderers have already been put to death. We visited the prison fac tory where all Nevada auto license plates are made. The prison Is built of atone exca vated from the mountain side In which the prison Is built, and In the prison yard Is a cavern extend ing back Into the mountain where the bones and skulls of prehistoric animals have been found. In the stone are footprints of three-toed animals, more than a foot In dimen sion, which must have carried some kind of an animal big aa a box car. All the stone for Nevada public ! buildings la excavated at the prison by the Inmates. The prison Is well built, supplied with the latest coll locklng devices. Is clean, well venti lated, substantial food supplied, and j the 101 men and three women seem ! to be pretty well contented with j their lot. I From Carson City we went to beautiful Lake Tahoe where we tra versed many miles of shore line, both north, and south. From the lake we returned to Reno over the Montrose Incline highway, reaching an elevation of 8033 feet, passing bp several snowdrifts. The highway Is well paved but narrow and unralled, and there were many places where my scattering hair stood on end when I looked directly down thou sands of feet at the bottomless abyss. I remarked to my wife If I fell over the cliff I would die of old age before I hit the bottom. The weather ts Ideal, a little warm at noon time, but cool of mornings and evenings. . A. F. STENNETT.
