Tools Rtolen Weston T. Dough
rty of the Brookhurst orchards on
the Crater Lake highway reported to
city police yesterday that a brown
metal tool box containing assorted
wrenches, socket sets, files and ether
tools was stolen from the ranch
sometime Monday night. He also
stated that two automobile tires were
stolen.
Hansen Leaving Mr. and Mrs
Harry Hansen will leave next week
for the Willamette valley where Mr.
Hansen expects to enter business
while Mrs. Hansen attends Orrgon
Normal school at Monmouth. Mrs.
Hansen, who has taught In Central
Point for the past 13 years, resigned
her position Saturday. Mr. Hansen
has severed his connection with the
George Yeo realty agency here pre
paratory to the move.
Smoker Fire A careless smoker
was held to blame today for a fire
that last evening burned over 20
teres of grass and brush in the GrU
fin creek area four miles west of
Phoenix. Who the smoker was could
not be established, the state district
tire warden's office said. The blaze
was reported at 4 p. m. and although
It was not In a protective area the
state office here sent two crews of
four men each with a pumper. The
fire was declared out at 8 p. m.
To Install Members of Medford
post and auxiliary of the American
Legion were today planning to attend
the annual Installation of officers
which will be held in the armory next
Wednesday evening, August 24. . After
the Joint Installation ceremony thre
will be dancing. A supper served by
auxiliary members will be the con
eluding feature of the evening's pro
gram. Commanding officers are urg
ing all member?! to set next Wed
nesday evening aside for this annual
get-together party. ,
Army Posts Open Recent war

are to be held November 14 to 18

Osteopath Charged
With Wife's Murder
LA CLEDB. Mo., Aug. 17. (AP)
Dr. William P. Lamance, one time
boner who turned to osteopathy be
cause he lost a bet with his father,
was charged with wife murder today.
The body of Mrs. Ella Lamance.

night on a cot In the vegetable cellar
behind the doctor's home.
8herlff Max Brown discovered the
corpse a short time after the 34-year
old osteopath reported his wife was
missing. Brown said she apparently
had been beaten to death a week

FOILED IN MURDER
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 17. (API
Sheriff's officers said Mrs. Elliabeth
Trlff, paroled from the state hos
pital for mentally afflicted at Cam
arlllo. tried to kill her two small
children with a paring knife today
but that the courage of five-year
old Jole TTIff saved his life and that
of his sister. Mary, three.
J. B. McCoy, sheriff's deputy, said
Mrs. Trlff became crazed, took the
children Into the bathroom of her
home, locked the door and told Jola.
"We are all going to sleep."
McCoy said Jole told him he saw
Mrs. Trlff poise the knife above lit
tle Mary's head. Jole grabbed his
mother's wrists, shielded his sister,
pushed his mother off balance, un
locked the door, and fled from the
house before his mother could over
take them.
Mary's screams attracted Mrs. Mary
McndenhaU. a nura, and with the
assistance of neighbors, Mrs. Trlff
was overpowered.

CONVENTION TO MOVE

Eight hundred delegates to the
20th annual convention of the Hotel,
Restaurant and Bartenders Interna
tional alliance today moved their
convention headquarters out of the
Whitcomb hoteP after the manage
ment refused accommodations to
negro delegates.
The delegates resolved to check
out of their, rooms and convention
headquarters at the hotel within 34
hours.
Manning Johnson, negro business
agent of. a New York local, told the
convention the hotel had excluded
negro delegates because of their
color.
