PAGE FIVE GOLD HILL BUSY Prize List Increased for September 10 Affair Barbecue Again Feature Many Grow Whiskers GOLD HIIJU Aug. ia.(Spl.) Fol lowing a rousing meeting of the fair board of the Northwest Jackson county fair at the city hall Monday evening, a busy season Is on for residents of Gold Hill, with plans calling for a bigger and better fair than ever this year. The fair will be held In Gold Hill Saturday, Sep tember 10. Interest In the fair took a decided upturn last board meeting when committee chairmen all gave their reports and told of their plans for the next four weeks. With nearly all prizes Increased In the various departments a keener Interest ts being shown In the exhibits and plans are being made for a bigger display than In previous years. Plan nip Barbecue The barbecue this year Is being handled by BUI Ferguson and a real feed Is In store. The tree oaroecue In the evening Is the main attraction of the fair, with more than 1000 visitors being fed at this event last year. Mr. Ferguson states he has purchased the best young beef In the valley and that potatoes and other articles have been donated for the feed. The barbecue kitchen on the city hall grounds will be used to prepare the meal, and the out door oven, which will be repaired before fair time will also be used. George Hoff, who efficiently prepared the barbecue last year will again officiate In the kitchen. The first event of the day this year will be the parade to start promptly at 10. Cash prizes will be given for many entries and nearly every merchant Is planning a float of some kind. During the parade the queen will be crowned and Mayor Gilchrist will turn the key to the city over to Fair Chairman Walter McLean. Whisker Contest An added feature of the fair this year will be the Judging of the whisker contest which will take place Immediately following the parade at city hall. A good many residents of this section have entered this con test and many aro the speculations as to who the winner will be. A complete Bports program start ing at 1 o'clock will be held during the afternoon. According to Chair man H. D. Force there will be rnces and contests for everyone who at tends, with prizes for the winners In each division. Serving of the borbecue will start at 6 o'clock this year and the dance will round out the day's entertainment. ASHLAND 10 SEEK ASHLAND, Aug. 12. C. Hockley, regional PWA director from Portland, and Indications are that the projects may be secured, according to Prank J. Van Dyke, city attorney. Rough estimates of figures show that the Incinerator will cost approx imately $20,000. fire station 66.000. and heating plant $4,000. In addition, it was asked that the Public Work Administration aid with funds for a heating plant for the contemplated fire station, at an extra expenditure of 64.000, and new fire fighting equipment to cost 1.500. Because of the numerous acci dents to bicyclists, the Briton trans port advisory council recommends that cycle tracks be provided on both sides of the main roads In that country. Menus of the Day (By Mrs. Alexander George) Summer Porch Refreshments (Serving 12) Assorted Sandwiches (- Chilled Fruit Punch Butterscotch Fingers Salted Nuts Candled Ginger ' Filbert tread For Sandwiches (Other nuts may be used) 3 cups flour 3 cups gramham flour 3 teaspoons soda 1 cup dark brown sugar 1 cup chopped dates 2-3 cup shredded filberts 1 tablespoon molasses 1 egg 3 cups buttermilk 3 tablespoons butter, melted Mix all of the ingredients together. Half-fill two medium-sized loaf pans which have been fitted with waxed papers. Let rise for 15 minutes and bake In a slow oven for one hour. Chilled Fruit Punch cup fresh mint leaves 3 tablespoons tea 3 cups boiling water 3 cups granulated sugar 3 cups orange ;utce 2-3 cup lemon lutce , cup pineapple Juice (optional) 10 cups Iced water Mix together the mint, tea and boiling water. Cover and let simmer for five minutes. Strain. Add sugar and stir until it has dissolved Cool. Add the rest of the Ingredients and chill until serving time. Serve In glasses which have been 3ne-thlrd filled with chopped Ice. Hutterscotch Fingers 5 egg yokss 2 cups dark brown sugar VA teaspoon salt 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 8 egg whites, beaten Beat yolks and sugar until well mixed. Fold In the rest of the In gredients. Mix lightly Pour Into a shallow pan which has been lined with waxed paper. (The batter should not be more than one Inch thick). Bake for 25 minutes In a moderate oven. Whll warm cut Into bars and (roU In dark brown sugar to which a little cinnamon has beeu added. (One teaspoon of cinnamon Is enough for a third of a cup of sugar. By Mrs. Alexander George. Dinner Cooked Over a Campflre. MENU FOR SIX Broiled Meat Cakes Barbecue Sauce Corn on the. Cob Potato Salad Buttered Buns Tomato Quarters Fresh Fruit Gold Drop Cakes Coffee Lemonade It rolled Meat Cuke. 1 pound chopped beef pound chopped pork 13 pound chopped veal teaspoon salt yA teaspoon pepper 3 eggs Mix ingredients and shape Into rolls one Inch thick and two Inches long. Broil for 10 minutes on sticks held over the campflre or brown in four tablespoons of bacon fat placed In a frying pan over the fire. Barber ue Sauce, cup butter 2 tablespoons vinegar -1 teaspoon salt YA teaspoon dry mustard teaspoon celery seed yA teaspoon white pepper teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 1 teaspoon minced onions 2 teaspoons minced parsley 2 tablespoons chill sauce 4 tablespoons catsup 1 cup boiling water 1 teaspoon' Worcestershire sauce (optional) Let Ingredients simmer together for 10 minutes In a covered pan Cool. Store In a covered Jar In the refrigerator. Reheat and serve pour ed over hot meats. Gold lirop Cakes. (Uses up left-over egg yjlks.) Va cup fat 1 cup granulated sugar cup milk a teaspoons lemon extract teaspoon salt 8 egg yolks, beaten 2 cups pastry flour 3 teaspoons baking powd-r Cream fat and sugar; Add the rest of the Ingredients and beat for two minutes. This beating is very Im portant. Half -fill paper cups or greas ed muffin pans and bake for 15 min utes In a moderately slow oven. Cool and spread with frosting. Hammond, company manager for this district, has been In Gold Hill for the past several days, ex plaining the new proposed dlti'. service to Gold Hill telephone customers The present plan, Mr. Hammond said. Is to have the new dial office equipment, as well as the new dial telephones on customers' premises. Installed so. that the change-ever can be made during the spring of 1939. The type of dial central office to be placed In Gold Hill Is known as a community automatic exchange and Is recognized as the most modern and tip-to-date equipment available. The equipment will give Gold Hill customers fast and efficient service 24 hours a day. With the modern equipment, Mr. Hammond explained, there would be a rate Increase of 50 cents n month for main line and party line tele phones. This Is being done, he said, to bring Gold Hill into tttie on a rate basis with other Pacific company exchanges of a comparable size In Oregon. There will be no chango In the present rate for extension t Alt-phones or other supplemental equipment. Neither will there be any change In the present rate for farmer line cus tomers served from the Gold Hill exchange. It was said, howtner, that a plan Is being worked out to pro vide dial telephones and service for the farmer line customers. When the new equipment is placed In service, all calls will be dialed, the telephone numbers having three dig its. (AP) PWA offl- clala In Washington have definitely rescinded the 9266,000 grant allotted for a new courthouse for Marlon county. This word was received In a letter to County Jucige J.
