Pendleton waa dull, but Its covered
bridge did offer a. little fun because
of the people who huddled Inside It.
Some brave soul fired at us with a
rifle tliey must have been warned.
Walla Walla was bettor. There, we
conceived the Idea of bombing the
state prison walls. Some prisoners
were killed, I suppose; but hundreds
of others must have escaped to har
ry the countryside. Sound strategy,
beyond a doubt.
Spokane took little time. When we
tod broken Hie railroad and split
those lovely green reservoirs, we went
right on, not even bothering to do a
complete Job on the grain elevators.
I thought It careless, myself.

On a three weeks' flying tour of
America for tha purpose of gather
ing material for use on his nest
two short wave programs, Mr. Cate
arrived by United Airliner from Port
land Monday night and left for San
Francisco on an airliner Tuesday.
He traveled to Crater lake, seeing
tha beautiful lake for the first
time, and In tha evening was
taken for an automobile ride through
hlatorlo Jacksonville and tha foot
hill district by A. 8. Roeenbaum.

the lake, stating that several pas

chsne to better appreciate tha view.
The travelogue broadcaata. which
are heard In all parts of the world,

tion for those who visit the world's
fairs In San Francisco and New York
In 1930, Mr. Cate explained. "One
of our chief purposes." ne said, "Is
to sell to foreign trsvelers the Idea
of stunning both fairs. For Instance,
we went to Indue visitors to the
New York (sir to also attend the
San Francisco exposition, traveling
across th eountry by one route
and returning by anothsr."

guese. Mr. Cat sstd It was estimated
that 600,000 persona In South Ameri
ca would hear the broadcast.

with Bonneville dam and the Co
lumbia river gorge. Mt. Hood and
the drive around the peak. Other
western national parks he haa vlalted
ar Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain,
lacier, Rainier and Mt. Olympus.
