Dates Gives Views. W. A. Gates, local mercnant, pressed his views on the project, and considering the fact that local farm' rs have shlppepd through the pres. nt agency 19,000 head of hogs to Portland markets at top prices and at an added Income of S10t..000. the merchant saw no need of importing bacon and other products with extra freight charges, when a local packing house could produce cured meats at leas cost, besides creating employ, ment. Rogue river valley Is prlmar- Uy a farming community, with the morchant dependent on the prosper- Jty of U:e farmer and the wage earn er, Mr. Gates said, and mentioned the present system of. competition as -vicious cycle which snows no improve ment. For aoveral years Jacksor. county farmers have shipped hogs through a marketing agency managed by Cbas Hoover, A. B. Brockway, and Arnold Bohnert at a cost to the farmers of twenty-flva cents a hog . receiving Portland prices. It was stated at the meeting that local buyers pay much as three cents less. Onions were named as a profitable new industry which it would bs pos sible to launch In Jackson countv. Onions grown here are sweet and of a superior quality and good for shipping, it waa stressed. Growing of sugar neet seed also was named as a future Industry Cooperation Seen. A splendid spirit of cooperation was prevalent at Monday's meeting- at which ton granges wore represented. The organisation, of which Henry Conger Is chairman with R. G. Fowler secretary, has been functioning for the last ten years, with Mr. Conger Its first chairman.
