AFTER BRIEF BREAK
Buford Allen. 3b, an Inmate of the
Oregon stats hospital In Salem who
escaped trom that Institution Aug
8, was taken Into custody by city
police last night after he had foiled
one attempt by an officer to take
him to Jail. He will be returned to
the hospital tomorrow or Thursday.
Allen was arrested first In Hie Ho
tel Grand. As the police officer was
leading him to the door. Allen broke
away and ran across the railroad
tracks and disappeared. At 11:40
about two hours later, tha Hotel
Medford notified police that Allen'
was there and this time when police
took him under their wing he didn't
try to escape.
Police learned ti at Allen stayed at
the Hotel Holland Sunday night and
left without paying for his room. He
also had registered at the Hotel Med
ford. Last night, he returned to the
Hotel Holland and attempted to
again obtain a room, and after he

CALLED BY DEATH
George E. Young of Jacksonville
died In a local hospital yesterday af
ternoon at the age of 78. He had been
a resident of the Anseraon creek dis
trict for 15 years end the Sterling
district for seven, having moved re
cently to Jacksonville.
Mr. Young was born In Nova Sco
tia October 1, 1860. He was a brother-in-law
of W. ii. Maltby of Med
ford. Funeral services will be held at
the graveside In the Jacksonville
cemetery at 2 p. m. Wednesday, A. J.
Hanby officiating. Friends who wlsn
to pay Weir respecta to Mr. Young
may call at the Perl chapel from S
to 1 Wednesday.

Mrs. C. M. Hurd, Pro-American
president, addressed the members and
guests In her proverbial Ingratiating
manner regarding her recent audi
ence with ex -president Herbert Hoo
ver. Mrs. Hurd was the omy women
present when Mr. Hoover spoke In
Medford several months ago tn her
talk, Mrs. Hurd pointed out that she
was particularly impressed with Mr
Hoover's sense of humor, his excel
lent knowledge of national and In
ternational affairs and his great de
votion for this country. Mrs Hurd
stated that she did not believe that
Mr. Hoover ever had a "ghost writer"
as was rumored during the time he
was the country's first man. princi
pally because he was perfectly cap
able of writing for himself
