C, Aug. o.(UP) This city of 50.000 was without water today after a 34-lneh main carrying water from the Deep river filtering plant collapsed under the weight of hundreds of tons of earth. The con dition waa described as "desperate," City Engineer J. L. Perkins could not estimate when the water supply would be turned on again. A lfl-lnch main, only other pipe, collapsed Sun day under weight of earth thrown up by excavations for a railroad sys tem, and engineers have been unable to repair It. The water main, which carried ater from the filtering plant to the heart of the city, parallels a railroad most of the way. Dirt was piled over the mains to a depth of 80 feet In some places, Perkins said, when the new line was built. Dirt from excavation of a new freight depot added to the difficulties. Had Pour Wings.
