MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUTE. MEDFORD. OREOON. FRIDAY. TTTLT 15. 1938. pige irons E SAYS GOODBYE TO HIRED GIRL Bj Fred Bailer (United Press stttt correspondent) ' WASHINGTON (UP) labor-aavlng machines haw displaced tn. Hired (lrl In the typical American Tillage borne, a nation-wide aurvey by the department of agriculture thowi. "There now are statistics to show that James Whltcomb Riley's chil dren's classlo 'our hired girl.' no longer portrays the typical In Amer ican Tillage life," the department said. Ahe waa the family factotum who lived In the household, cooked such good things to eat that the children loitered about her kitchen table until ahe chased them away with som such refrain as: "Clear out of my way; there's 'time for work and time for play I Take your dough and run, child, run, or I cant get no cooking doner In reaching its conclusion the de partment studied "household help" tables of 8,434 white non-relief fam ilies In 140 typical villages In ell sections of the country. "The Importance of 'our hired girl' has decreased as services of com mercial bakeries and laundries have Increased, aa canneries and garment factories have grown, and as labor saving devtcea have come Into the home," Dr. Louise Stanley, home eco nomics director who supervised the survey,, said. "Then, too," she added, "many a homemaker would rather spend ifor a car and widen her social contacts than to spend for a maid If this means only leisure to sit on the front' porch and watch the neighbors ride by" The New England and Pacific re gions were lowest In percentage of families having hired help and In average amount spent. In the former only one In 33 families employed help. The average of all families was M a year.' On the Pacific ooast the percentage ef such fsmllles ranged from four In the low Income bracket to 45 In she highest. Hired help for the house wife waa slightly more prevalent in Berth oentral, middle Atlantic, plains and mountain states. The southeastern vlllsge housewife, In contrast to her northern and west ern sisters, stood a very good chance ef having help, Among 2.093 lam tUe Interviewed household help ranged from 16 percent In the low Income bracket S250-J499 a year) is 100 percent In the highest (5,000-W.9BB). Pomona Grange (By Gertrude Raafe.) Jackson county Pomona Orange will meet with Upper Applegate ersnge. July 33 at 10 a. m - Upper Applegate Orange hall Is Wives of Forest Officials Uphold Service Traditions "Wagner Butts lookout Is on an other fire. I sent Wagner Oap fire man' to the Wagner Butte station to be on lookout. Headquarters fire man Is on his way to a class B firs with CCO men. "Ranger Fort and assistant Albert Young have also left for the fire. They think they'll hsvs It trenched before the CCC's get there. My daughter. Prances, and the fireman's wife, Mrs. Eugens Tower, are going to a spot fire about 400 yards from the class B blase. "I called another crew of COC men from the camp for standby at the station. If snythlng more happens, I'll let you know." An hour later more had happened. Mrs. Port telephoned again: "The girls returned and reported that Ranger Port and the protective assistant had the lower fire trenched but It waa not safe and the upper fire was still biasing but COC men are fighting It. I sent Foreman Mills with his crew to the fire. That Is the situation up to now." Tea, wives of forest service officers hsve their own tradition of service. They don't get psld for their work, but that does not matter. They love the forests. Wives of United States forest ser vice officers have a tradition all' their own. It parallels the public service tradition of the foresters themselves. Wives of the foresters lore the forests too. They want to aee the forests conserved, used by commer cial Interesta for sustained-field ope rations but more especially utilised by the pdblto In finding health-glv-lng recreation In the mldat of sce nic, tranquil beauty. Women of the forest service share the men'a dread of fire, that beauty and asset-consuming force. When a fire occurs, the women go Into ao tlon, too. Consider the example of Mrs. Lee Port, wife of the veteran ranger In charg of the Applegate district of the Rogue River national forest. For the second time in a week lightning struck Thursday evening, setting numerous fires. Mrs. Port went to work Immedlstely. Here Is a report received at Med ford headquarters by Blmerl Jarvl, fire chief, from Mrs. Port. It wss a telephone report. This Is Mrs. Port spesklng. I thought I hsd to tell soma ons what action was being taken. One fire la out. The fireman la here lac ing his boots.
