PAGE FOUR JirEDFOHD MATL TirmmrE. MEHFORD, QftEGOy, THURSDAY, JULY 7, 1938. So. League Heads Overrule Crater and Merchant Protests 'V TO UPHELDBYACTION Umpire's Decision Accepted in Medford Controversy With Sea Coast Team No Alternative Is Seen Protests lodged by the Medford Craters and Grants Peaa Merchants of games played June 38 were denied last night by a vote of Southern Oregon baseball league directors, meeting In the Orsnta Pass Cham ber of Commerce. Aa a result of the directors' action. Crescent City became official first half champions, and Medford and Grants Pass finished In a tie for aeoond place. The Medford protest, growing out of Its 0 to 7 loss In 13 Innings to Orescent CVy In the first-half finale, waa denied when the league directors trpf'-eld the decision of Umpire Ross that Crescent city's Perm, scoring from fhlrd base In the seventh Inning, had not Intentionally Inter fered with a throw to the plate, and that Reynolds, who scored from eeoond base as the ball was deflect' d to the stands, was within Ills basa-runnlng rights as no Crescent Olty playera were gathered Illegally atrounri home plate, as alleged In the Medford protest. Umpire Rosa tcatl fled that the ball hit Perm on the head and that no Crescent City players were Illegally on the playing field wuen Reynolds, after stealing seoond on the play, continued on until he crossed with the tying run. Medford, In its protest, alleged that Perm threw his hands above Ma head, striking the ball and de flecting It away from Catcher Cliff McLean, and that Reynolds sHou'.d Dot be allowed to score because of Crescent City players gathered at borne plate. The Grants Pass protest alleged that, In Its game with Treka, a Yreka batter waa not called out when he stepped across the plate to attempt a squeeze play with a runner coming In from third base. It was brought out at the meeting tf'.at the umpire had called the base runner out, according to the rules. Treka and Glendale were not rep reaented at the meeting. Represent ing Medford was Lowell Brown, sub stituting for Manager Wally Rlckert who was unable to attend. Grants Pass waa- officially represented by Manager jud Pernoll, end Orescent City by Manager Roy Deo. Bob Adler, president of the Crescent City club, waa also present, aa were Umpire Roes of Crescent City, Al Drolette, O rants Pass catcher, I. O, Xrwln, rep reaentlng Ashland, and Austin Pro cter or Medford, lesgua secretary. Dora Pfovost of Ashland, league pres ident, presided. In rendering their decision on the Medford protest, the directors made 11 clear they had no other alterna tive tf.an to take Umpire Rosa" word for It that Perm didn't Interfere with the throw and that Crescent City players were not gathered at the plate when Reynolds scored. Sport Graphs Billy Hulen iayi: Ken Williams to Take Over Helm of G. Pass Nine They've finally got Ken Williams back In harness down Orantt Pass way, so the Merchant an hereby tabbed by this department aa the team to beat In the Southern Oregon league's second-halt pen nant race. On of the greatest mijar teague miters 01 his day, Ken will owau 410 hi, pu' ' hir' " ,l0 unl,orm fr 7 .' v i th mrtnlrAV Bill!-. r-i Wily Rules the monkey suit of the Climate City club each and every Sun day. He will act officially In the capacity of base- line coach and pinch hitter, but that's not fooling snybody. When Ken Williams Is on the ball field there la only one manager for Grants Pass, and that's Ken Williams. In fact, he not only runs the Merchsnt team, but he practically runa the game. It has been two years alnoe Ken handled the bnseball bus'ness In Qrants Pass, and In those two years the Merchants haven't come close to league pennant. They will now. never worry. The appointment of Williams, who hit .307 for the St. Louis Browns In 102a. came aa the . Merchants underwent a general ahakeup In preparation for the second-half race which opens Sunday. Phil Griggs, pitcher, and Harold Hyde, utility, were dropped completely from the roster and Outfielder Ray Koll. brother of Crescent City's Mike Koll, snd Cstcher Al Rodgers were cut from the traveling squad. Joe Miller, a reputedly tweet first baaemsn, was signed. The Granta Pass team has been a lack-luster, non-hustling outfit all season, but with Wllllama out there they'll be a new ball club. You can't perform for Ken without hustling, because that'a the kind of a ball player he was and that's the kind of a manager he has proved himself to be. You either hustle, or else. Of course, Jud Pernoll will remain of ficially as manager, but It will be Wllllama calling the plays and run ning things. We all welcome Ken back Into the fold. Aha, tli Just as we thought. Wrestler Bob Kenan ton had posi tively no hand In that press bul letin business from Los Angeles, which stated he was a Long Beach Cal.f marine. In a letter rerelvrd from the big fellow yesterday. Bob wrltea ha la very put out over the matter, and wants It clearly understood that he has "always. In every way possible, let everyone know my pride In my state, Oregon, and In my home, Gold Hill." Sent from Hollywood, where he la living while appearing In main events In southern California, part of the letter aaya, "I take pride In pointing out Oregon'a beauty epota, Ita cli mate, Its wonderful water and my home In Gold Hill, beside the river Rogue. I have learned the meaning of fair weather frtenda, who pat you on the back when you win and fall to notice you If you lose. When In Gold Hill, I am Just one of the town people, met with a smile, a firm handclasp, a cheery greeting: In other words, just one of the boys come home to get a little more cour age to face the problems when I am away from my real friends. I hope In the future, should you see other press bulletins where some mistake has been made, you will put the blame where It belongs and know that I had no hand In It." Nice going, Bob. We knew all along that you wouldn't forget your old home town and let those Callfornlans claim you aa one of their own. Don't be surprised If: The lights at the high school sta dium are entirely paid for this sum mer, what with between 30 and 40 cash finding Its way Into the softball box office nightly, and an average of 800 fans attending each program . , . Ranch at Corona, California, a veteran 35 h.p. "Caterpillar" Diesel Tractor has piled up a total of over 18,000 hours of hard work. Today, it is still going strong, working 10 hours a day In a 1.000-acre grove. How much is 18,000 hours? Most of ns think of engine life in terms of miles traveled. For example. If you had driven your automobile 100,000 miles even over the smooth highways of today, you would consider it a faithful veteran, ready for retirement... Let's figure this 18,000-hour tractor's performance in terms of auto mileage. At only 30 miles an hour, your car would travel 540,000 miles in 18,000 hours certainly a rare performance. Yet many "Caterpillar" Dealers' files contain records of satisfied owners who have operated their tractors ten, fifteen, even twenty thousand hours records that prove the advantnges of manufacturing methods learned in "Caterpillar's" 33 years' experience building track-type tractors. They are advantages you can prove in your own grove. Have your "Caterpillar" Dealer give you additional facts.
