TO NEW PEAKS IN
NEW YORK. June 29. (AP)
Buying again swelled to record
breaking proportion! (or 1838 In
the New York stock exchange to
day, hurling prices of leading liauea
up II to (d a share, many to peak
prices for the year.
Building material, steel, agrlcul
tural, chemical and various Indus
trials led the advance, but It broad'
ened to include virtually the en
tire list, with rails and utilities
registering the widest gains in
months.
The turnover approximated 2,700.
000 shares, largest for any day since
October. After wavering for the past
two days, the market resumed last
week'a advance with striking vigor.
Brokers said the fact that the list
had been able to absorb a large
volume of profit taking sales In the
past two sessions without losing any
aubstantlal part of last week'a record-breaking
advance prompted
fresh buying wave.
Commission houses reported large
buying from out-of-town branches
and abroad.
The day's business news contained
few bright spots, such as the
weekly report of electric power pro
duction, showing the largest total
since March, and the weekly petro
leum figures, Indicating the largest
reduction of gasoline stocks for any
week In years.
Early reports of freight movement
on tho railroads for last week showed
further gains.

Country Still Searching for
Permanent Solution of
Unemployment Problem;
Is Companion Revelation
HYDB PARK, N. Y., June 29. ()
President Roosevelt gave the nation
assurance today that the big federal
drive on depression would reach full
momentum by July 1.
At the same time, the president
said, this country still la searching
for a permanent solution of the un
employment problem solution that
will not Involve big expenditures for
armaments.
Mr, Roosevelt, discussing relief ob.
Jecttves at s press conference late
yesterday, said one matter under
study was how Sweden was able to
pay off the oost of a public works
program. Instituted during bad years,
with funds accruing during mora
prosperous times.
The president compared that Scan
dinavian country's success In paving
off works debts with the United
States which he noted did not rid
Itself In the comparatively good bus
iness years of 1938-37 ot the cost of
lending and spending programs In
1833-34-35.
In the present $3,760,000,000 cam
paign to aid economic conditions In
general, Mr. Roosevelt said all feder
al agenclea Involved Were pushing
toward top speed by the first of the
month.
PWA, he asserted, was going ahead
as fast as It could. WPA would have
as many as possible of its recently
authorized 400,000 new workers en
rolled by that time, and the Civilian
Conservation corps was nearlng lta
350,000 full atrength. Other agenclea
with lesser programs were hitting
fast pace, too, he added.
