NAVY TRY DIESEL' ENGINES FOR PLANE USE TULSA, Okla. (TJP) Rapid devel opment and Improvement of Diesel engines, which during the past two yesrs have taken over many of the power Jobs formerly held exclusively by steam or gasoline motors, was shown at the International Petroleum Exposition here. Diesels have become more versstlle becsuse methods have been found for paring down their weight and for removing the highly objectionable smoke and fumes which formerly pre sented a major problem. At one time. Diesels weighed too much end smelled too strongly to be used In automobiles or airplanes. Today, hundreds of pounds lighter and free of fumes, they are coming Into wider use. Aero Dleeels probably are the latest development In the field. Relatively free from fire hazards, the rotary type engines are considerably more economical than gasoline engines of similar power. One airplane engine', recently out of a 10-year experimental period, now la being manufactured under gov ernments,! limitations for use by the army and navy. The engine Is rated at 330 horse power, delivering one horse-power for each 1.94 pounds of weight. It weighs only 830 pounds, suttsble for airplanes, snd will run twice as long on the same amount of fuel as a gas oline engine of equal power and weight. Dlesela burn a cheap fuel oil, mak ing It cost approximately one-fourth the price of gasoline. Diesel engines are leas complicated than gasoline motors. No Ignition system (batteries, spark plugs, wiring, etc.) Is used. Reduced to Its simplest form, the actjon of a Diesel engine Is a series of spontaneous combustions. Air Is drawn Into the combustion chamber on the Intake stroke of the piston. The piston comes up, compresses the air, and fuel oil Is sprayed Into the cylinder, where It Ignites from the heat of .compression and furnishes the power Impulse. Use of strong, light alloys has re sulted In development of the smaller, lighter engines suttsble for mobile units. Formerly, the engines were too heavy for any but etatlonary uses alnce the cylinders had to be built of heavy steel to wlthstsnd the terrific pressures necesssry for operstlon. 1 California Gets Shock. Bach aide plays 18 pieces: six In fantrymen; four artillery figures (shells) ,- three tanks, two bombing planes, two pursuit planes, and the main piece e, symbolic eagle, to checkmate which is the aim of op posing players. Pieces can be moved along diag onals, indicating strategic lines such aa highways and railroads, compli cated by "barred" areaa representing lakes or watercourses. Different rules apply to each move. The soldlerman pawn moves one square In any direction: tanks up to three squares (or may move as knights do In ordinary chess); artil lery up to four squares, and planes up to five. Capturing powers are very Intri cate. Thus, an enemy piece may be taken by forward, backward or side ways movement, never diagonally. Planes may Jump over all other pieces, except enemy artillery or en emy planes. All pieces may move across a river, but not along its banks planes alone excepted. Lake sections may not be occupied or crossed. Planes may cross, but not "occupy." Artillery may capture any piece across others, but does not take Its victim's place. And so on. The winner Is the side which "checkmates" the other's eagle, or "kills" all the opponent's infantry, or reaches the third enemy line with no fewer then five pieces, not Including planes; or, when the opponent has no more thsn five ar tillery and tank pieces left.
