PAGE FOURTEEN MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORI). OREOQN. FRIDAY. .TUNE 10. 193$, FINDS C OF C MEN HARD TO SATISFY Always Seeking More Ex penditure in Their Locali ties Southern Oregon Meeting Cited As Case Br PAUL W. HARVEY. Jr. BALEM, June 10. (AP) Chamber of commerce member ve About the hardest people to satisfy, the state highway commission believe. No matter how much money the commission spends in a certain re gion, the region's chamber will cry for more, complaining that the com mla&lon has forgotten them. Last week the commission went to Uedford to bear southern Oregon chambers complain of the condition of the Pacific highway north of Grant Pass. The chamber accused the commission of planning to divert traffic from California over the Wil lamette and The Dalles-California highway! Instead of the Pacific high way. They also charged that the com mission hasn't spent enough money on the Psclflo highway In aoutbern Oregon, although the department is spending 93,000,000 on the Siskiyou grade, Chairman Explains But after Chairman H. T. Cabell of the commission pointed out that southern Oregon has received as much money as any other section, the chamber Appeared satisfied. Ca bell also pointed out that the com mission doaant have all the money in toe world to spend. The commission spent 1 1 9,000,000 last year, Its revenues coming from 4.500,000 In federal funds, 0.780 .OO0 from the gasoline tax and S2.Q06.00O' from motor vehicle license fees. But all or that money did not go Into new construction. Nineteen per cent went for Interest and maturi ties on bonds, 16 per cent for main tenance, and 10 per cent to coun ties. Administration cost was only 1.02 par cent. ' Borne department engineers don't feel any too kindly toward chambers of com me roe, the maintenance de-1 partment right now having a grudge against the secretary of one cham ber who told the department that there was vary little snow In the MacKenzle pass. The maintenance engineer, on the basis of the secre tary's estimate, figured It would cost S&o to remove the snow. However, when department snow plows arrived at the pasa, they found It would cost 1600. The eeaJous secretary cost the department $1450 S264.020.000 Spent Prom 1011 through 1031 the de partment haa apent 204,O2O,OOO, the state giving $303,407,000, the federal government W3 ,876,000 and counties 15,700,000. Of the total, 141.000, 000 went , for new construction. Douglas county having the most work done (11,000.000 worth). Lane county waa next on the list with 8500.000. Other counties get ting road work Improvements of more than 5.000.000 were Clatsop, Clackamas, Coca, Jackson, Klamath, Lincoln, Multnomah, Umatilla and Wasco. By highways, the Pacific highway has had the largest amount spent on It. S30.6O0.0O0. The Oregon Coast highway with 23,000,000 was second, while the Columbia River highway waa third with 14.138,000. It cost 36,000.000 to maintain the state's 51 highways during the 20 years. Callforolana have been doing their part to help Oregon have a banner tourist year, predicted by the state highway department. Of the 31,797 cars which came Into the state during the fir it fire months this year, 14.671 ware from Calif nla, and 6650 from Washington.
