The Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce was complimented on Its
stand for an unpolluted Rogue River
yesterday by Oeorge Bower of Santa
Barbara, Gal who had Just com
pleted a six-weeks' stay on the upper
river near McLeod and who likes
the fishing so much that he plana
to return In September and build
a house on one of two lots he pur
chased at McLeod bridge.
Mr. Bower, who has been a yearly
fisherman In the river for the past
11 summers, stated that the reason
he comes here every season Is be
cause the Rogue la so undefiled,
making It one of the finest rivers for
angling In the country.
This year Mr. Bower landed nine
big salmon, the largest weighing
37!4 pounds and dressing 33
pounds. He caught It last Friday and
Immediately entered It In Lamport's
contest. Mr, Bower left for home yesterday.

ley Oolf club next Sunday morning,
starting at 0 o'clock, to select a 10

state-wide medal play team tourna
ment at Eugene, July 10. Qualifying
rounds will also be medal play, with
the 10 low gross scores winning berths
on th,e team.
A low net tourney will also be held
In conjunction with the qualifying
rounds, and all members of the local

ball and baseball coach at University
of Indiana, was virtually assured the
position of head basketball coach at
Stanford university today.
The Stanford board of athletic con
trol recommended Dean's apolntment
last night. It Is subject to approval
by President Ray Lyman Wilbur and
the board of trustees, which likely
will come within a week. No salary
terms nor length of contract were
disclosed.
