day for the performance of Earl Ort
man, Los An steles sped filer, who
averaged 265.539 mile an hour la
streaking to victory In the major
event of the Pacific International
air races.
The mark waa forwarded to Wash
ington aeronautical officials for rec
ognition as a new world's record in
closed course apeed flying.
William R. Enyart. secretary of
the national contest board of the
National aeronautical association, said
both Ortman and Col. Roscoe Turner
of Chicago, barely 50 yards behind
the Los Angeles filer most of the
way. bettered the old mark of 24
miles an hour Bet by Michel De troy at
of Prance In the 1936 Thompson tro
phy dash at Los Angeles.
The race yesterday, climax of
three days of racing and stunt fly
ing which had claimed two lives the
previous days, was a free-for-all af
fair over 150 mllea 18 laps with
four pylons per lap.
The Ortman-Turner duel was one
of the closest In race flying history.
Turner, who won 2500. averaged
265.457 miles an hour. The race was
from a still start, and was timed in
3S minutes and 61-100 seconds.
Tony Levler of Montebello, Calif.,
winner of the first two days races,
finished third, with Ray Moore of
Palo Alto. Calif., fourth and Art
Chester of Los Angeles fifth.
Ralph Johnson and Gus Gotch,
both of Los Angeles, died when their
planes crashed Saturday and Sunday,
Johnson's while stunting and Gotch's
while racing.

Barcelona Steak
1 pound beef round, ground
Vi cup cauup.
teaspoon salt. '
VI teaspoon paprika.
1 egg yolk.
9 tablespoons chopped green .
peppera.
3 tablespoons chopped onions.
IVi cups tomatoes.
Va teaspoon crushed bay leaf.
3 tablespoons chopped celery
leaves.
Mix beef with catsup, salt, pap
rika, yolk, peppers and onions.
Snap into four cakes, each two
thirds of an Inch thick. Brown well
In two tablespoons of chopped uet
which have been heated In a frying
pan. Add the rest of Ingredients.
Cover and allow to simmer for 30
minutes. Cover with olive sauce.
Olive Sauce
Vi cup chopped ripe olives.
3tablespoons chopped green
olives.
1 tablespoon aalad oil.
1 tesapoon chopped parsley.
Mix Ingredients. Heat and apread
on top of meat.
Rhubarb Conserve
g cups diced peeled rhubarb.
3 cups chopped pineapple.
Vi oup pineapple Juice.
3 tablespoons lemon Juice.
1-8 cup orange Juice.
8 cups granulated sugar.
Allow the frulta and Juices to
simmer for If minute In a covered
pan. Uncover and boll for five min
utes. Add sugar and boll gently un
til the conserve thickens. Pour Into
sterilized Jars.
Beet Salad
1-8 cup salad dressing
cup sour cream.
3 cups chopped cabbage.
I teaspoon celery seed.
3 tablespoons chopped parsley.
1 cup diced cooked beets.
14 teaspoon salt.
V, teaspoon paprika.

Lerand S. Wright, 92, a resident
of southern Oregon since 1910, pass
ed away near Phoenix. Oregon, Tues
day at 11:15 a. m., after a few weeks
illness. Mr. Wright was born In Syra
cuse. New York, July 13, 1845.
He spent his early life in New
York, and when 14 years or age, mov
ed to Owatonno, Minn., with his par
ents, where he met Miss Ida M. Coff
man. They were married in Septem
ber, 1901. Mrs. Wright passed away
April 38. 1923. He was a fine Chris
tian man. and well liked by all who
knew him. He was a member of the
First Baptist church.
Mr. Wright had lived the past 10
years at Phoenix, and before moving
there lived on the Central Point
Medford highway.
He leaves to mourn his departure.

Funeral services will be conducted
at the Perl funeral home, Thursday
at 2 p. m., the Rev. W. A. Dawes of
the Baptist church officiating. In
terment will be In Jacksonville cem

Twitchell Held
As Drunk Driver
Levcrt Twitchell, 28, of 330 North
Front street, charged with driving
while Intoxicated, waa given until
10 o'clock tomorrow morning to en
ter a plea, by Justice of the Peace
William R. Coleman today. Twitchell
waa ;belng held In the county Joll
when he could not pay ball set at
150. .
State police, who arrested Twitchell,
said he waa driving on North River
side avenue last night in a reckless
and "wobbling" manner.

met In San Francisco at a convention
of the German -American bund, left
town quietly today after a two-day
meeting during which they were boo
ed by thousands of protesting antl
Nazl pickets.
Hermann Schwlnn of Los Angeles,
coast organizer of the bund, report
ed a membership Increase during the
past year and said the bund was re
ceiving "a high degree of co-operation'
with other patriotic American organ
izations in our fight against Jewish
communistic activities."
The bund's program, outlined by
Schwlnn, called for "a Oentile na
tion, run by Gentile Americans."
As the bund convention drew to a
close yesterday, Major General Paul
B. Malone, U. S. A., retired, told a
Memorial day gathering at the San
Francisco presidio cemetery:
"We can find no place in our na
tion or in our city for militarized min
orities pledging allegiance to far
