TROON. Scotland. May 27. (API
Charley Yates of At lan ta tod ay
reached the final round of the Brit
ish amateur golf championship by
hanging on to gain a one-up victory
In 19 holes over Hector Thomson of
Scotland.
In tomorrow's Sfl-hole title match
the cheerful American Walker cup
player will meet Cecil Ewlng. giant
Irishman who eliminated O. Ross
(Bandy) Somervllle of Canada, two
up, "In the other semi-final.
Yates, who had seen Thomson wipe
out the three-hole lead he built up
with a two-undor-par 34 on the first
nine, sank a nine-foot putt for
birdie on the 19th green for his vie
tory.
Yates thus gained credit for ellml
natlng the two only former chara
plona left In tho field. Thomson
won the title two years ago while
veteran Cyril Tolley, whom Charley
put out In this morning's quarter
finals by 8 and 2, captured the title
In 1Q20 and 1029.
The excitable southerner, who In-
eluded an eagle 2 In his morning
round to be out In 33, hit the turn
In 34 this afternoon. He won the
first hole by sinking an 13-footer,
rammed home a beautiful 60-foot
putt for another winning blrdte at
the sixth, then put his tee shot on
the short eighth 20 feet away and
sank that putt for a deuce and 3 up.
Short with his second, Charley
dropped the tenth, and saw his lad
out to one hole as Thomson canned
a nine-footer for a 8 at No 12. An
eight-footer for a 4 at No. 15, where
Yates was short again, put the Bcot
on even terms, and he went ahead
for the first time on No. 17, where
Yates sliced Into the sand.
Charley then took the next two
holes for the match. At the 18tb,
while Thomson got In trouble, Yates
played two down the middle of the
green, squaring the match with a
par 4. On the first extra hole tie
came out of the rough, nine feet
from the pin, with his second and
with Thomson only foot short on
his third, walked up and hit the ball
Into the center of tho cup.
