"MEDFORD MATL TRIBUTE, MEDFOTin, OREGON. FRIDAY. MAY 20, 1938. PAGE FIVE HIE PI CUT NOW UNDER WAY AS EMM Central Point Mill Starts . Logging in Rogue River Forest Tract Highest Timber Price Is Involved Rogu Elver Sugar Pine company today began the cutting of white pine in the Copeland creek tract of the Rogue River national forest. The lumber Is to be processed in the company's mill at Central Point. The company was awarded the contract for 3,700,000 board feet of the white pine, bidding 67-76 a thousand. This Is the highest price ever paid for any kind of timber "on the Rogue River national forest and Is believed to be the highest ever paid In Oregon or Washington for any timber excepting Port Orford cedar, it was said by Karl L. Jan ouch, forest supervisor. As usual, in forest service sales, the price Is for stumpage, the company having to get the timber out at its own ex pense. Bids on the white pine sale were called several months ago, but award ing of the contract was not dis closed by the forest service until today. Cutting of the white pine la in the nature of an experiment, Mr. Janouch said. Future disposition of the timber will depend largely on the outcome of the present sale, he related. The amount of timber In volved In the current sate Is only a small part of the total white pine stand, he said. The white pine of the Rogue River national forest Is believed by Mr. Janouch to be the equal of any In the United States, if not superior. It was only through the persistent efforts of Mr. Janouch that atten tion was finally centered on the stand here. It having been Ignored previously on -the assumption there was no white pine In this locality. Has Special L'ses. Because of Its specialized uses, white pine Is In great demand as a commercial product. Its lightness and strength make It desirable for use on Blilps and it Is also used exten sively In pattern-making. Consider able quantities of it are also used in making matches. H. C. Obye, assistant forest super visor, spent today at the site of operations as the cutting got under way. Begtrnlng Monday, the forest service will have a scaler on the Job. Edward Leach has been assigned to the work. The contract provides that the entire 2,700.000 board feet must be cut this year. Chauncey Plorey is in charge of operations for the company. The stand is about seven mjles above Union Creek. - Sub Cnish Cause Found LONDON, May 20. (p) A public inquiry disclosed today that faulty wiring of a signal was responsible for the subway crash m which six persons were killed Tuesday. The accident, in which one crowded train rammed into another, was the worst In the history of London's "underground." SAY IT WITH CAKE! May 20.-HP) Newly-wed Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia and his tbrlde. the former Grand Duchess Kyra of Russia, left todny for Bremorhavcn to embark on the Bremen for the United states. The Capital Parade (Continued trom Page On.) ate candidate wa licked by the marmoreal puddler Jim Davis but he did pretty handsomely, for a broken-down tariff lobbyist. Such ore the owners of Earle and Jones, Davis and James. At first glance, the fact that virtue still must be Its own reward appears to be about the only lesson to be drawn from the victory of such a crew. Looking deeper, however, there are other morals for the nation In the Pennsylvania doings. On the Demo cratic side, the McCloskey-Kelly-Lawrcnce faction, which had stolen the state machine, administered a licking to Joe Quffey and John L. Lewis. It was not too bad a licking, but it was a significant one, for poor Joe Guffcy still controlled the fed eral patronage and voted the WPA workers, while John L. Lewis had his big labor group behind htm. The Guffcy-LcwLs forces Included tho segments of the electorate most heavily relied on by the new deal. The Guffey-Lewis gubernatorial can didate, Tom Kennedy, had the of ficial blessing of Postmaster General James A. Farley, extracted by a threat to the White House that Kentucky C.I.O. men would oppose th cherished leader,' Alben Bark ley. And Tom Kennedy was beaten, roughly five to four. Thus it Is Justifiable to suppose that, in knock-down, drag-out fight with a strong local Democratic ma chine, the White House may have trouble. As the president Is now de termined to remodel his party In a fairer image, this Is distinctly im portant. ' For Republicans, the indications of the Pennsylvania primary are more encouraging. The total Republican vote ran ahead of the Democratic total. In this, in the signs of a labor rebellion against John Lewis, and In the defeat of Gilford Plnchot, there are signs, of a revival of conservatism. .Plnchofs crushing dereat, how ever, should depress those who hope for s enlightened Republican party. He was an elderly Don Quixote, who rode to the fray with his energetic wife playing Snncho Panza. He made a poor campaign, yet at least he had the distinction of having given Pennsylvania Its only honest and forward-looking government in seventy-five years. And he was easily beaten by the money bags of Joe Pew. If Joe Pew's Judge James wins the governorship in the fall, a great step will have been taken toward the res toratlon of mammon In the Republi can temple. The altar of the fat god has not been well served of late. His years of burnt offerings have seemed to be at an end. Possibly the most Important thing about the Pennsyl vania primary Is Its forewarning that, U the depression returns the Republicans to power, Mammon will still be their household deity. Finally, there was a moral for all AT 229 EAST The new Rose bakery at 2J9 East Main street was in full operation today with Bud McKlnney supervlsoi of production.
