B 0 YEAR TRACE OF MISSING CO-ED Mystery Of Ruth Baumgard tier's Disappearance Re mains Unsolved Coun try Scoured For Clews Br Jean Hoffman United Press Staff Correspondent. CLEVELAND (UP) Slightly more than a year ago. some time between 11:15 p. m., May 4, 1937, and the morning of May A, Ruth Baum gardner, Ohio Wealeyan university co-ed from aub urban Lake wood. Ohio, walked out of her college dormitory either by her own free will or by coercion. She has not been heard from since. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Baumgardner, at 111 retain the Wil liam J. Burns detective agency to direct the search for their daughter, Dozens of leads to the girl's where- a bouts have poured Into the detec tive agency and Into the parents' home ever since Miss Baumgardner was found mlulng. Many of them ' were followed up without success. For a time, Mr. and Mrs. Baura gardner posted a WOO reward for Information leading to the finding of their daughter but to no avail. Had Little Money The meager facts known about the co-ed's disappearance are these: She last w?j seen attired In pajamas and lounging robe near her dormitory room, In Delaware, Ohio. Next morn ing, she bad vanished. Sho left be hind all her possessions except a brown suit, hat, pair of shoes and a pocketbook presumably containing only 93 or 94. One of the beat substantiated clewe was one which developed shortly after Miss Baumgardner was discov ered missing. Two women roortcd that thay had seen a girl, answering to the description of the co-ed, hitch-hiking In Zanesvllle, Ohio, shortly before noon the day her disappearance was noted. The girl hitch-hiker was accom panied by a boy. Oaston Stlcketer, Cleveland manager of the Burns de- I tectlve agency, attached Importance to this clew because the two women noted the hitch-hikers before they knew that Miss Baumgardner was mlMlng. The' widespread publicity of the case has brought many letters, tele grams, pb'n? Oftli find purported clews from "cranks." A sensational development in the case last Decem ber has not yet been proved In this category neither has It been proved otherwise. Htory Deflated A prisoner in the Belmont county Jail at St. Clalrsvllle, Ohio, told au- thorltlrs that his cellmate and three other Plttsburghers had abducted Miss Baumgsrdner from Delaware. They believed, apparently, that she might be ransomed. The cellmate and racketeers, however, subsequent ly were indicted for the slaying ol a state patrolman. An exhaustive Investigation failed to produce any evidence that the four men were connected with Mlsa Baumgardner's disappearance. i Burns operatives virtually have canvassed the United States In track-! lng down every semblance of a clew. j Police, highway patrolmen, news- j paper reporters. Stack voted to re commit the wage-hour bill. f Two Pay Fines On Traffic Charges Lyle Hartmnn of Jacksonville, vet eran county employe, was Assessed 5 and costs for speeding a truck on a plea of guilty before Justice of the Peace William R, Coleman yes terday. Daniel Flohrer of Crescent City, Cal charged with passing a span of horses on the Tolo viaduct, with out proper clearance or a clear view ahead was fined 95 and costs.
