It lias taken no active part in the intra-party struggle for iimiiiniitions, for in nine cases out of ten no issues have been iinolved. It has been the usual struggle between Jones and Smith, the result being of no moment except to the gentlemen concerned, the difference between twecdle-dum and tweedle dee. But we have entered the gubernatorial race for governor on : he Democratic ticket, because here an issue WAS involved a supremely important issue. Nothing less than the issue of good government versus bad. , And that issue is to be decided in the Primary, by the vote on Friday. If Governor Martin is nominated, he will be re-elected. If hi is defeated, he, and the fine, fearless, efficient type of govern. ment he represents, will be wrecked, not only for this year, but in all likelihood, for many years to come. Vanooue.r. B CI. Member- OrgnewspapeWblii j ssociatiop Ye Smudge Pot By Arthur Ferry. The ourrent tempest in the teapot of Oregon Democracy, with a Portland politician and a Juvenile radical as Incidental whirlwinds, seeking the political scalp of Governor Martin In dicates a number of things, Includ ing: that the Democratic party can stand prosperity no more than It can produce It; that, nothing makes a Democrat so mad as the realization they have elected a competent and popular official; and, that It has an Incurable weakness for nutty notions, and mothering nondescript crack-pot groups. Individually and collectively. The primary vote Friday will tell whether Oregon democracy has gone buggy, without a horse, "MINTAGES Mil. UIAIM'KV (Caption In Cooa Bay Times) Proof sufficient, J. Cochran Robin, Is drilling his two boys, In the art of flying and finding their own fish-worms, on the othso lawn, and doing a good Job." Elmer will have to grow more tall," aid he. "The way It I now, the lit tle fellow eats down too hard. He's low In the getaway, and I'm acared one of the Bluejay goons will get him one of these, days. The other one Is coming along fine, except ho stands over the worm, Instead of In front of him. He gets no leverage, and tries to pull the worm up between his legs He'll break himself In two doing that trick." Fashion experts claim the trend In men's clothing la toward "brilliant hues." A man In a pair of red pants, won't look any cooler than a lady In a red dress on a torrid day. Southern Oregon residents are warned to look out for counterfeit dollars, while looking for the genu ine. "Salem, Mass., announces that wo men, accompanied by babies, cannot be served liquor In Its taverns. The babies had much rather have their bottles at home, anyway." (Norfolk (Va.) Ledger) And, the little darlings don't llko to b set down on the bar In a puddle of beer while Mama hoist a snifter, with both hands free. A carnival has come and gone. A number or citizens are reported to hare nothing to cat. but two kewple dolls and an Indian blanket they won. Among the active opponents of Gov. Msrtln Is a gont under deportation orders to Germany, and thrice con victed of felonies. He has appeared cast In the role or the Governor In stae satire, cntltltxl: "Id Rather Be Wrong, Or Old Iron PanU Goes to Town." His acting ts said to be worse than hip rword, and his nui sance value high. The force of agi tation have (Midenvored to make a martyr of him, with scant success though Washington, D. C, manifests great scllcltude for him. lest he b returned to his native lnd. Thlivs have come to a pretty pass, when an alien criminal can publicly belittle the chief executive of a sovereign state. How long would he sarcastically mimic Adolf Hitler In the land or his birth? About half as long a it takes you to read this sentence. And, now long will It tnke the Democratic op ponent, of the Governor. If opportu nity offers, to lusiie him a pardon, the only action that will save him from a long deserved deportation? in kim; tiik issi'K "Dr. Hrnry Noble Sherwood, for mer pastor of three Rapt 1st churches. : was threatened todav with dismiss! from the presidency of Georgetown College. (Press Dispatch.) 1X7 R don't want to SEE that. And we are quite sure, an nvprwliplmimr mninritv nf tho nor.nl nf thin fitnn AnnU want to SEE it. That is why figuratively speaking this column has been rather tearing its editorial shirt, on behalf of the Governor the past few days, and will continue to do so until the final gun. The skipper of this column has waited over quarter of a century for the type of government. General Martin has given this state, a government based absolutely upon special priv ileges to none and a square deal to all. A government refusing to play partisan politics, at any place or any time. A government refusing to be bluffed or buffaloed, by any fiietion or any self-seeking minority, by any gangsters, goons, ir political racketeers, but cleaving absolutely to the line of what is square and fair, has held the welfare of the people of tins stale, all the people above every other consideration. THAT is a rare type of government for any state to have V inn't want . Cnn ! iKKanlrnJ 1 1 4 U - - Hut it will bo unless Governor Martin is renominated on Friday. And he won't be unless EVERY VOTER who believes in Governor Martin, goes to the polls day after tomorrow and votes for him. AS stated yesterday a crisis exists, as we see it. And it V " a crisis that is directly up to the people of this state. the rank and file, just the common garden variety of voters. The kind of government Governor Martin has given this state, has marie enemies honest, fearless, independent govern ment always makes enemies. And as the campaign has pro gressed, the efforts of those enemies have increased, until at the 11th hour, even national figures like John L. Lewis of C.I.O., opposed to General Martin's labor policy, and Secretary k'kcH of the Department of the Interior, opposed to him on personal grounds, have been called in. In other words it looks dark for the forces of good govern inont in Oregon, t wo days before the battle begins. e e OUT don't forget this, boys and girls. On next Friday morning, the table-thumpers, and the radio- bellowers; the wire-senders and the letter writers; the party machine workers and the party heelers, (yes and the editorial pontificators for that matter!) will have had their say, thev will be through, But the man with the ballot in his hands, or the woman, WON'T be. On that day, YOU Mr. Voter, and YOU Mrs. Voter will be supremo, and not what they say, or have said, but what YOU say, WILL BE DONE! So to you, this final word If you believe in Governor Martin, and the kind of govern ment he has given you, GO TO THE POLLS AND VOTE FOH IIIM, and don't let the day pass without doing this, for youi one vote MA decide the issue. And this applies regardless of your party. For while Gover nor Martin's name does not appear on the Republican ballot you can write his name in and the more votes the Governor gets Friday in HOTH parties the better for him and the cause of good government in Oregon. Every time Governor Martin's name is written in on a Kopublican ballot it will be counted. More than thnt Oregon courts have ruled, no cross need be placed before the written-in name, although our advice to those Re publicans who WISH to vote for Martin, is to make such a cross, so there will bo no question, Not only in this state, but in many other states, the primarv nominee of one party, has also received the primary nomination of the other party, and both nominations have been accepted.
