Bourbon Gubernatorial Aspi
rants' Hope for New
Deal Endorsement Fur
nishes Main Interest.
By Paul TV. Harvey, Jr.
SALEM. May 13. ( AP) Oregon's
llfitless primary election campaign
went Into Its last week today wttb
both factlona In the democratic gub
ernatorial campaign trying to obtain
new deal endorsement.
There wore rumors from Washing
ton that the national edmlniatra
tlon would endorse Henry L. Hess
ol La Omnde, labor candidate agalmv
Governor Martin.
' Martin supporters displayed evi
dence which they hoped would prove
that Roosevelt was friendly to Mar
tin, the chief exhibit being a letter
written March 22 by James A. Far
ley, democratic national chairman
No Open Endorsement
But observers here thought the
national administration would not
support oponly either faction, the
feeling being that It would have
much to lose and nothing to gain
by doing so.
The report that Oovernor Martin
had the state pay $45 for his per
sonal Christmas cards and 9200 for
a plaque to be awarded each year to
the winning reserve officers corps at
Oregon State college and the Univer
sity of Oregon was admitted by 4-ne
governor, who said it was "state
business."
A political advisor to the gover
nor said that this charge was "fod
der Inspired by Republicans who
want Hess nominated, because the
Republicans think Hess would be
easier to beat In the general elec
tion." It was noted that Martin and
State Treasurer Rufus C. Hoi man,
Republican candidate for U. S. sen
ator, endorsed the voucher for the
cords, but Secretary of State Enrl
Sncll, Republican candidate for re
nomination, did not do so. Bnell
said he couldn't remember, but he.
thought ho was out of the city at
the time the voucher was to be
signed.
The voucher for the plaque did
not have to be endorsed by anyone,
since the funds came out of the
governor's "special Investigations"
fund.
A week front today 021,225 voters
will he eligible to nominate candi
dates for governor, U. 8. senator.
1!. ts. representative, state officers
mil llm hTlHlaturo but, outside of
i lie democratic gubernatorial race
t'.mre has been little appeal to the
voter!.
Observers cannot remember acorn'
pulun as dull as the present one.
These voters who will be out of
town on election day already hAve
' cast t heir ballots, today being tho

Employers In 64 Industries receiv
ed good news t h Is week when the
