The Pig War
One little pig went to market and
made a name for himself. Another
little pig, strange as it seems, almost
changed the course of history by the
simple expedient of digging up a few
potatoes!
The other little pig was owned by
an Irish-Canadian living on tiny San
Juan Island, near Vancouver, back in
1859; the potatoes he rooted up be
longed to Layman Culver, an Ameri
can living on the same island.
Annoyed, Culver repeatedly warned
the pig's owner, finally killed the
pig. The Irishman, an official of
the Hudson Bay company, decided
to make an official issue of the situ
ation. He would appeal for redress to
Brltalns' highest court, he said.
To which Culver replied: "San
Juan Is American territory." ,

The squabble did reach high courts
of both countries but, strange as it
seems, nobody knew whether the
Island was American or British. Com
missioners who had drafted the
boundary treaty were vague In their
description of the water-channel di
viding line.
Threats of violence echoed across
the tiny Island, and British and
American troops were sent to the
scone. Rear Admiral James C. Pro
vost of Canada, hearing that Amer
ican soldiers occupied the Island,
sent his en tiro fleet to the spot.
- All available American military
forces on the Paclflo coast were con
centrated there. General Wlnfleld
Scott arrived and arranged a Joint
military occupancy. Thus the ltuaT
tlon stood to San Juan for a number
at the Community hospital. Mother
and baby are reported doing nicely.

turned home Sunday from the hos
pital, Is convalescing favorably.
At the businessmen's meeting April

signed. The church committee has
purchased shakes to reroof the old

Mr. and Mrs. Alva Webster of
Bliss. Idaho, visited Mrs. Webster's
parents here April 27, later going to
Klamath Falls, where both secured
employment.

Mrs. John Heckner underwent an
operation Saturday at Sacred Heart
hospital for acute appendicitis.
Mrs. Clyde Wilson was brought
home Sunday from Sacred Heart
hospital with her new baby boy.
Mrs. Wilson received word last Wed
nesday that her grandmother, Mrs.
Moon ot Morrell, Neb., had passed
away that day. Mrs. Moon will be re
membered as the elderly lady In
the Moon family who resided In a
tent Just west of town lsst summer.
Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Ballard, of
Weed, were guests of Amy Dow on
their visit over Sunday at the home
of Mrs. Ballard's father, Oeorge Hoff
man, on Thompson creek.

ion was handed down in 1873 II
