PAGE EIGHT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY. APRIL 15. 1938. LITTLE INTEREST With the primary election five weeks away, and the registration books closing next Tuesday at five o'clock, political interest in Jackson county Is at the lowest ebb In the memory of the oldest Inhabitants. Outside of some of the candl dates for county post distributing campaign cards, and visiting country friends on sunny days, they have shown no activity. Willis E. Mahoney of Klamath Falls, democratic candidate for the United 8ta tea senate, held a meet ing here last Monday, attended by 800 democrats and a number of curious Republicans. The little Interest shown so far concerns the Republican and Demo cratic contents for county commis sioner. The Republican entries are W. W. Allen of Med ford. William Perry of Eagle Point, and N. D. (Nick) Brophy, last minute entry. All are reported shaking hands with the voters dally. Democratic entries are Commis sioner Otto Caster, Phoenix, and Thomas Stanley, Lake Creek. They, too. are busy. For the other offices only casual campaigning Is underway so far, but It Is expected Interest will liven up, at least In the last two weeks. The county clerk's office reported today the registration was picking up, though not In proportions of a rush. The Capital Parade (Continued from Paee One) Phone 265, Odelle Osborne West or Rosalie Leslie fcr a spring permanent Hadlcy's Salon of Beauty. 4 The Grace Circle of the Presbyter Ian Church will hold a rummage sale at 211 E. Main Street Saturday, danger Fteud would be In, even U he withdrew himself Jrom life be yond his library walls. At last Freud answered, with some finality: "No, I will not leave my country. If the naels come, If they offer me physical violence, I shall kill myself. Otherwise, I shall stay In my It brary." committee was disclosed, he with drew his name. A substitute was hastily chosen over the week-end and no official disclosure was ever made that Mr. Oay had been con sidered. Whether because of Mr. Gay's withdrawal or simply because the new board Is a good one. the SEC authorities are definitely pleased with the changed set-up. So Mr, Gay, at least, has his wish. The omission of Charles R. Gay from the new governing committee of the New York stock exchange was the most startling feature of the recent clean aweep. which sent all the exchange's former rulers Into the discard. After all, Mr. Gay had served the exchange as Its president through the last difficult years, was elected to the presidency as a "liberal" and, In spite of his many concessions to the old guard of the exchange, Is not now considered an old guarder. He seemed to deserve some recogni tion. The fact Is thnt the omission was deceptive. Mr. Gny was offered a placo on the new governing .com mittee, and accepted the offer. Thereupon, however, the word that ha was to be on the new committee was passed among the membership of the exchange. Many members feared that the retention of Mr. Gay would Irritate the securities and exchange com mission as a sign that the exchange's surrender was not complete. They complained. Mr. Oay soon heard of the com plaints. Deeply hurt, but quite as anxious as any other to make the new governing committee a great success, he pondered the problem for while. Then on April 0, two anys before the personnel of the now A startling political Item Indeed is the quite authentic report that the administration will solemnly support Senator Augustine Lonergan for re-election from Connecticut this fall. The plump, kindly, verbose sen ator Is one of the little band whom the New Dealers have named black traitors. Not only did he oppose the court bill; he voted against the president's reorganization bill . For such men, It has always been said, utter destruction waits. The fact Is that treason seems to pay these days, while loyalty Is not a remunerative proposition. Poor bumbling, bellowing Senator William H. Dletcrlch, of Illinois, manfully supported the court bill, and was promised great things then. Now he haa calmly been hurled to the wolves. Meanwhile, Senator Lonergan. whose stand against the court bill strengthened him Immensely in Con necticut has been able to tell the guiding rrftnds of New Deal strategy that "you'd better take me, or you won't get a Democrat at all." Faced with such an alternative, the strate gists have given Senator Lonergan a faintly enthusiastic blessing. Communications Are They Good Chrlstliins? To the editor: We know of an old lady living In Medford surrounded by churchea on three corners, all one block distance. Has one of them ever crossed her threshold at any time or offered to do a turn for her, an almost helpless cripple, since October?" One of the commandments Is to visit the widows In their affliction. They call them selves Christian. Well, maybe they are, but they are not working at It very much. Most of them watch the clock only. The one of whom I speak lives one block from aaid three churches, has been Indisposed, not able to wait on herself, but the church members are good Christians, to turn a hand they haven't time. Too many aid pari tea and shows to listen to the call of God. (And they all past by on the other side). A. O. R. (Name on file) Medford, April 14. Wants a Woman President To the editor: Eleanor Roosevelt drove a railroad spike Into the hu'. of man when she said "stop knifing each other." The profitable way to stop man from butchering himself off the map en tirely Is, chango him Into a gold-fish altogether. In a bowl, on a table, in the parlor, man would be safe, silent. clean, and economical. With water man could write his history, and what a blessing this act would be for posterity. "By the beard of Allah I the earth might go places without resembling a "Tprile A" slaughter house. And so one bock lead to another, and another, etc. With a grand salaam for those constructive souls who clean out the vats, and keg this precious, dark, brown beverage; tho committee for its Indulgence concluded , . . "that this is the very best of all possible worlds we shall over live In." Despite countless men are happily engaged slicing each others throats, and making an ex cellent Job of it, with numberless other men stnndlng by eager, to com mit suicide ditto. Further, weneed a woman presi dent, U. S. A. after 1040. A Hitler with skirts, as it were. Providing of course, woman's delicate sense would not revolt, tackling such a "gosh a'mity" over-ripe tak.
