"PA'CE TWELVE PARK DEDICATION TABLET UNVEILED Exercises Near Rogue River On Highway Inscription Penned By Ben Hur Lampman. A bronze tablet will be unTelled nnd a new park dedicated near a lamed aprlng on the Pacific highway Just thl eld'- of Rogue river at 2 p. m. on aunuay, December 13. The pun lie ! Invited to the ceremony. The dedication addreaa will be de llvered by County Judge Earl B. Day, He will be alnted In the unveiling Mtes by Mies Nancy Day and Mlu Janice Mac Dona Id. At the top of the tablet le a ba relief of Mt. McLoughlin, with pton can In the foreground. The tablet inscription waa written by Ben Hur Lampman, southern Oregon native who now la an editorial writer for the Oregon lan In Portland, The dedication la the culmination of a movement Initiated aeveral year :igo to beautify the Pactfle highway, At that time Samuel Hill offered cash prizes to Oregon counties through which the highway passed for the best beau tt flea tlon plans. Jackson county entered the contest under the leadership of O. I. Mac- Donald. A committee waa appointed comprising representative of all the communities of the county. Jackson county won first prize of $125 The committee then mapped out plana as to how and where the prize money should be expended. Two pro ject were selected. One called for i he beautm cation of the highway at i he top of Black well hill and the otb-r-r at a natural spring this aide of rtngua River. The spring come to the surface In the middle of the high way on what was once the Schlefflln donation land claim. It waa at this spring that pioneers used to stop to est and procure water for themselves snd their oxen. Mr. MacDonald appointed the fol lowing committee to carry out the beautlfl cation plana at the two select- pd place: Miss Jane Snedlcar, Med lord, Mrs. Lois Blankenburg and Tony 3ou, Gold Bill. Mrs. Effle Bird wye, rlogue River, and A. T. Lathrop, Gen eral Point. The committee encountered many handicap and found that little could be accomplished with the small amount of the prlM award. When the Jackson county court house grounds were being planted. Hie county court promised assistance :r the committee lent the I13B to the . junty to help In the landscaping. Lout summer the county court ln- 1 created the atate highway commls . ion In the beautlflcatlon project at i he famous spring near Rogue River. As a result a beautiful park has been laid out on the river side of the high way, with gravel walks and ft stone drinking fountain and pool. Shrub and tree have been plant ed and a stone retaining wall ha been erected on the aide away from the river. The Improvement ha cost several thousand dollars and It was to show the county's appreciation of the com mission's assistance that part of the prize award was utilized In procuring the bronze tablet which will be ded icated next Sunday. Not much time Is left to refurbish the toy., he counseled. Xn past years a large quantity of toya haa been left at the Jackaon County Chamber of Commerce but so far this season only a handful has been received, It was stated by A. H. In charge of the projoct for the Lady Lions, Mrs. Arthur Render stated that contribution this year are disap pointingly small where there la an urgent need for a large quantity. The discarded toy may be left at fire headquarter or the chamber of commerce. If the donors are unable to transport the playthings them selves, tha toys will be called for. Mrs. Render said. Mr, Medford stated that, ac cording to tentative plans, Bert Moore of Grants Paes, Safeway em ploye there, would be the new man ager of the local unit. Mr, Medford expressed his sin cere regret that Mr. Haws was leav ing the company. He said that Mr. Hawg had produced an excellent record during his years In the organ ization and wished him the best ot luck In his new enterprise. "I have enjoyed extremely pleas ant business associations with Mr. Medford and Safeway," Mr. Haws stated, "and leave the organization with kindly feelings toward all." The Medford Central Market will be modern In every detail, Mr. Haws explained. The store will handle a complete line of groceries, meats and vegetables.
