Will Rogers' son. also named Will, is editor and publisher of the local paper, the Beverly Citizen. He is as hard to find as his famous father, and one can secure an appointment with him as easily as with the President of the United States. The Beverly Citizen is in a nice new tnodernistio office on seven linotypes, and a number the business office, who have whereabouts than if be were don't know where he is, what office upstairs or not, but finding out. We climbed the least his office door was locked When we came down we saw a husky young man, bare headed getting into a roadster, he shoved in the clutch and shot down the street. The way a stray lock of hair hung over one eye suggested Will, Sr., perhaps from Oregon was on his trail, Well if Will the second doesn't like to be interviewed he comes bv it naturally. His father avoided reporters as he did Hollywood night life. We tried it once, got an appointment with Will at the Upliftcrs club, during a polo match. Fortunately the fam ous Charlev Ruircles hospital was reported only about half a mile away, on Santa Monica boulevard, and also fortunately we ran into no speed cops. Charley Ruggles had moved, but a "skilled dog doctor" named Jones had taken it over. Dr. Jones was not in, but six of his assistants were. One of them rushed out to the car, his white gown flying behind him. a stethescope around his neck, and a light reflector on his head. With pro fessional dispatch, he picked applied the stethoscope. He reported the dog as still living but his heart bent was rapid and weak. A clinical thermometer was then applied in the proper place, and temperature was reported as subnormal, which might indicate a hemorrhage, or might not. Then the doctor had a great deal to say about injections to stave off arsenic poisoning, and X-rays of the stomach, and a most learned dissertation regarding protein alkaloids, soluablc and insoluable salts, and the interesting fact that William Randolph Hearst had a dog of identical breed that had been similarly affected once. No one had the heart to ask dog recovered, we personally doctor the fact, that we were want to be, that the dog only darkest Oregon and only three but didn t know just how to do Well the poor little fellow is this is written, and we all have to get the result of the diagnosis. The one that Invented anhedonla might have dis covered, had he persevered with his study of physiology, that there Is more than Just an Idea or an atti tude In anhedonla. Another definition of anhedonla Is absence of pleasure from the per formance of acts which are pleas urable to a normal Individual: fail ure to get a "kick" out of doing things. Some "killjoys" are obvi ously sick and their Bufferings auffi- clently explain their cheerless dispo sition. Others are apparently well, free from any evident disease or ail ment, simply lack relish, gusto, zest, well-being, felicity. Chronic anoxia Is what alls a good many of these anhedonlcs. This la my opinion probably you will not find It In any textbook or hear It from any authority until 1943 or later. But meanwhile It will do no harm to try It on your annedonla If you have a touch of It. Anoxia Is a deficit of oxygen In the tissues and cells. Acute anoxia Is asphyxia. Chronic anoxia may be due wholly to frequent or dally ex posure to carbon monoxide in the at mosphere the carbon monoxide crowds out oxygen. Again It is often due to slow metabolism or a low metabolic rate. Shallow bra thing alone may account for chronic an oxia, although It Is hardly possible to correct shallow breathing by con scious active deep breathing.
