ADRIENNE'S
The following article was prepared
especially for the Mall Tribune by
Hy Frager, Med ford chef, who has
received national recognition for his
unique recipes.
By Ily Frager
A Thanksgiving festival for bless
lngs received throughout the year
Is an old-age custom the world
over. In our own United states It is
of special significance, and Is our
first national holiday. In 1821 dor
ernor Bradford decreed a community
dinner to celebrate the end of
months of hardship and want under
gone by the Plymouth colony.
That first feast made use of foods
native to tn new country, yet the
menu was very like those served to
day. Oysters, clams and fish were
plentiful, and there was a variety of
grains, fruit and vegetables about
which the Pilgrims had learned from
the Indiana. Corn bread, scalloped
corn or corn pudding, and Indian
meal pudding may have been Includ
ed In the early New England bill of
fare. Wild fowl and game. Including
the much-prized turkey, were plen
tlful in the neighboring woods.
It only seems fitting that the typ
ically American holiday feast should
feature those foods for which this
country la famous, and according to
the present trend, more and more
homes will do Just that this year.
Foods found in America are blended
with some favorite English dishes,
recipes for which were brought by
the colonists from their old homes
