welfare fsmtlles. Construction of the
homes, some of which will be built
of street widening salvage materials,
will aid in coping with the housing
shortage in Detroit.
Plana for the 15 houses In the
project are complete now. All of the
homes must meet the requirements
of the building code of the federal
housing administration. Ten of the
residences will be constructed by the
Detroit department of publlo works
The housing committee Is seeking
bids from prlvste builders for the
other five.
The D. P. W. homes are to be built
of materials salvaged from street
widenlngs and wrecking operations
resulting from condemnation proceed
ings. Basements will be features of
the I. P. W structures, but private
builders will not be required to In
clude them If an -adequate utility
room" is provided.
Each of the homes will be or dif
ferent architectural design. All will
bo equipped wltn refrigeration units.

at CHrldlh today of a heart attack.
When he presented his theory of
tho identical nature of physiological

British Royal Society there were alle
gations that he was not the first to
discover the electric, response of or
dinary plants.
The society at first rejected his
pnper but later recognized his claim
of priority and conferred a fellow
ship upon him.

four-hour walkout this afternoon.

Rsdlo Telegraphers' association, a

clusive bargaining rights.

(UP) Children who return to school
"tired and listless, rather than rest
ed and keen for work," after week
ends, were the subject of an Investi
gation here.
The Investigation was made by Dr.
D. H. Oeffen, medical officer, and
Dr. Gertrude Forrester, school med
ical officer. They placed the blame
on four causes In their report the
cinema, 'dancing, the radio and mo
toring. A large percentage of children. It
was found, attend the ctnema at
least once a week. One boy was re
ported to be paying five visits regu
larly each week. (
Infants' and girls' school teachers
complained of the dancing "craze."
They ssld the children go to bed
with muscles twitching to the rhythm
of the latest Jazz tune, and their
sleep and rest are disturbed. Many
also attend tap-dancing classes after
school. Performances are frequently
given in publlo after tiring nights of
rehearsals.
No fewer than 36 percent of In
fants and 35 percent of junior chil
dren listen to the radio In bed. It
was found. '
Many children spend . most of Sat
urday going on long journeys In clos
ed cars to the seashore. Some of
them were either late at school on
Monday or unable to attend at all
owing to fatigue, complain the
teachers. .

PORTLAND, Nov. 33. f AP) In
an unusual case growing out of a
summer vacation of three students,
the Norwegian motorshlp Maloja was
held in port today under a 38.040
llbel action filed by the youths
guardian, George Eates. lawyer, on
grounds that the captain "ditched"
the trio In distant Yokohama.
Estes said the boat would have to
remain here "until a bond satisfac
tory to us is posted." A hearing In
fwleral court remains to be set.
The complaint alleged that Ken
neth Long, 17, Alfred Sadler, 18, and
Stanley Walker, 18. all of Portland,
sailed on the Maloja last May for the
orient, Intending to return for the
fall' term of school. Reaching Yok
hama, the captain told the students
he had to go to Singapore. ,
Upon their return to Japan, the
captain said he had to sail to Aus
tralia and might be gne a yar, th
complaint alleged. When the youths
protested, they claimed he called
them "American rats" nnd abandon
ed them.

believes the American college alum

In the college periodical he listed
the following "unworthy specimens"

shine dried Portland today after days
of almost constant rain, but the
weather, bureau predicted it would be
short-lived. Showers for tonight and
Wednesday were forecast, with snows
in the mountains. Since September
1, 13.83 Inches of rain have been
recorded, compared to normal of
9.47 Inches.

PORTLAND, Nov. 33. (AP)
Thomas Lenhart. president of the
retail grocery clerks union, said to
day a closed shop agreement hss been
reached with 60 Portland candy
stores, providing for a 44-hour week
of 51, days and minimum pay of
$18 weekly, with double time for
holidays.

CLEVELAND (UP) A hook and
slice-reducing golf ball la being In
troduced here by Its Inventor, John
R. Fa its r.
Farrar, a structural designer In the
engineering department of the Erie
railroad, has played golf for eight
years. He usually shot around 93
and sometimes got down to 85 wnen
the course was conditioned and the
wind blowing his way.
He tried to induce a friend to take
up golf, but was met with the reply:
"lit play when somebody invents a
ball that won't sfice."
So Farrar acted.
He designed a ball with eight cir
cular grooves. His theory Is that if the
ball la struck on either side, produc
ing a book or slice, the ball will ro
tate without creating turbulent air
currents. The amount of book or
slice would be reduced by about '45
percent, Farrar contends.
There Is, however, a catch. The
ball must be teed up with the grooves
In horizontal position. Thus, it ts
necessary to play winter rules on the
fairway, If the player wishes to play
a hook-less-sliceless game, Farrar
says.
Driving machines have tested his
ball. Farrar says, and It compared
with standard balls. He calls It the
new "answer to a duffer's prayer."
