Strange as It seems, Admiral George Dewey of the U. 8. Asiatic squadron both opened and closed active oper ations of the Spanish-American war. HIa destruction of the Spanish fleet at Manila on May 1, 1808, was the first active engagement and the surrender of Manila under Dewey'a guns on August 13, somo three months later, was the flna.1 notion.
