Marquart, com mander of the United State Yangtze river patrol, sped toward Nanking today from Hankow on board bis flagship, the gunboat Luzon, to give any necessary aid to the American embassy and 70 Americans here. The United State gunboat Oahu also was on lt way to Nanking to Join the Panay, the only gunboat In the Nanking harbor. SHANGHAI, Nov. 17, (AP) HeaT Uy reinforced Chinese armies struck back at Japanese invaders today in a counter-attack along the "Hlnden burg" line defending Nanking, some 135 miles away. Thousands of fresh troops from the Interior marched eastward to bolster Chinese forces southeast of the capital. At the Game time, civil ians fled from Nanking to the west and the evacuation of government offices was under way. Chinese commanders said tne counter-attack had permitted them to form new lines and declared: No Compromise. "We will not capitulate or com promise with japan. We will fight to the last ditch." Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek had several hundred thousand trained troops at his disposal. A force ot 150.000 Szechwan province warriors arrived at Nanking from the upper reaches of the mighty Yangtze. West of the capital there was a double stream of traffic civilians evacuat ing to the interior and troops march ing to the front. In North China the famous com munist eighth army harassed com munication lines and garrisons ot the Japanese. Commanders here dis closed that the same tactics would be used If Japanese succeeded in crossing the Yellow river and taking Tslnanfu, Shantung province capital. Japs Push South. Japanese forces pushed southward In Shansi province, the main body heading for Llngfend, new seat ot the provincial government after the evacuation of Talyuanfu.
