Oct. 31. p) Her voice breaking at times and her eyes filling with tears, pret ty Margaret Drennan told the Jury trying her lor murder today that she took a revolver with her on a ren dezvous with Paul Reeves to prevent a repetition of an earlier attack. As Reeves widow watched her in tently from a spectator's seat direct ly in front of th witness stand, the 20-year-old secretarial school student declared that Reeves, the father of two children, assaulted her first In hie car the night of August 7 She learned that same night for the first time, she said, that he was married and a father. A month later, she testified she agreed to meet Reeves at his Iselin bungalow when his wife was away to tell him she believed she was preg nant. Took Father's Gun "Why did you want to see Paul Reeves?" defense Attorney George Burton asked her. "He was married. He was older than I was. He was the one who got me the way l was." "Did you take anything with you?" "I took my father's revolver " "Why did you take It?" "I took It to protect me. 1 remem bered what happened In Linden and I didn't want it to happen again." She said she arrived at Reeves' about 8:30 and that all the lights were out. Reeves called to her and. she added, he was nude. "It was awful." she said. Tried to Escape She broke loose from him after a struggle and tried to get out the back door, she testified. Q. Were you able to get out? A. No. Q. Then what did you do? A. I took out the gun. It seemed that as soon as he saw the gun he started to Jump. Q. How many times did you shoot? A. I don't know. Q. Do you remember now whether you tried to get out the front door? A. I was so excited I don't remem ber. Margaret described the scene when he returned home as yesterday's wit ness had told of ft. She was In the bath room, she said, when her lather came In. "He asked me what happened. I said 'daddy I did if." Her voice became so shaken with sobs It was scarcely audible. Her face became flushed, but she held her head up and continued to answer questions without Interruption. Never Saw Wife During the lengthy cross-examination, the defendant repeated several times she did not know who "Jack Lyons" really was and had never seen Mr. and Mrs. Reeves together Never before the night of August 7, she said, had Reeves kissed her. Asked why she had not "screamed" when Reeves "attempted to attack you" the night of the killing, she re plied: "Because he was holding me so tight I couldn't breathe." Miss Drennan described other meet ings with Reeves and came in her story to August 7. She said sho went for a ride with him that night and that "Jack" drove off the main road on a dirt road, stopped and asked her "to get into the back seat." "I didn't think much of it. but he had always acted nice to me," she said. Beginning to weep and clasping her hands nervously, she added: "He started to maul me." "I told nlm I was a nice girl and no man ever touched me," she said. Q. What did he say to you when you got home? A. He said: "Listen Margaret, I'm married. I have two .children. My name Isn't Jack Lyons. It's Paul Reeves." He said "if you tell any body about this I'll kill you." Q. Why didn't you tell your mother about It? A. 1 couldn't tell my mother any thing like that. Q. Did you tell the police? A. No. Q. Why not? A. They all knew me and I couldn't tell them about It. Insurgent officers announced liai son had been established between General Franco's troops In Gljon and the beleaguered garrison at Ovledo. This announcement was Interpreted as meaning government troops which had been besieging Ovledo since the start of the civil war IS months ago had abandoned their efforts to cap ture It upon learning that Gljon had fallen. Although mass entry of insurgents Into Gljon was not expected until tomorrow morning, officers said It was possible for the advance guard to penetrate the city tonight. LONDON, Oct. 31. (P) Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden, addressing commons at the opening of the fall session, today thanked Italy for mak ing at "the eleventh hour" her new and "very welcome" contribution to Europe's program of non-intervention in Spain by agreeing to preliminary steps for withdrawal of foreign fight ers In Insurgent' armies. Eighth Of Nation Visited Parks In 1937 Travel Year WASHINGTON. Oct. 31 (AP) One-eighth of the nation's popu lation. 15.000.000 persons, visited areas under jurisdiction of the na tional park service during the travel year ending September 30, the service reported to Secretary Ickes. The figure showed a 30 percent Increase over the record-breaking attendance of 1936. "There is apparently no limit to next year'a potential national park travel." Acting Park Director A. E. Demary said. Registration at the various area, with last year's figures. Included: Crster Lake. Ore., 303.400 and 160, 300; Oregon Caves, Ore., 55,300 end 63.170. Poach ing on the farm owned by the First National Bank of Portland, Ashland branch, which Is leased by D. R. Smith, resulted In the shooting and death of a very valuable team horse Tuesday, according to a report here. Some hunter shot the animal back of the ear, with the horse dying shortly afterwards.
