NAVY DAY OBSERVED
AT LEGION MEETING;
STAG PARTY PLANNED
"Navy Day" was observed by mem
ber of Medford poet of the American
Legion at their regular meeting in
the armory Tuesday night.
Legionnaire E. M. West told of the
origin of this annual event which is
observed throughout the nation on
October 37 under the sponsorship of
the Navy league. West, navy recruit
ing officer for thla district, asked
that all Legionnaires display thfe na
tional colors on Navy Day.
Lee Oarlock, who represented Med
ford post at the national convention
in New York last month, gavo a
comprehensive report of the conven
tion proceedings and quoted interest
ing excerpts from the speech of Na
tional Commander Colmery in which
he vigorously assailed all subversive
groups attempting to promote Com
munism. Na7lsm and Fascism in this
country. Accomplishments of the past
year under Americanism, peace pro
gram, rehabilitation. Immigration en
forcement, child welfare and other
important phases of the Legion's pro
gram also were covered by Oarlock in
his report.
Excellent progress was reported on
the plans for Armistice Day by the
general chairman, Gain Robinson, who
spoke of the various phases of the
day's program, including the parade,
street stunts, dugout, football game
and the big Armistice dance and floor
show which are expected to draw a
record attendance this year.
He also called for reports from the
following committee chairmen, all of
whom reported progress: Dugout, J.
P. Pliegel; Lagion scrip sales, C. L.
MacDonald: dance and floor show,
Lee Gar lock; and advertising and
publicity. H. L. Bromley.
Legionnaire E. K. Bruegger, scout
master of troop 7, reported on the
Boy Scout rally in which the Legion
troop made a good showing. He spoke
of the need for suitable standards and
emblems for the troop flags and a
motion was passed to secure these
items at once. Garloclt told of sev
eral recent cases of relief for local
disabled veterans being secured by i
the Medford Legion post after all !
other efforts had proved futile.
It was reported that the V. P. W.
instituted a plan at the last conven-.
tlon for an emergency relief orga
nization which should prove effective
In case of floods, fires and other
major disasters. It should also tie
in well with the American Legion
service companies, organized by many
posts several years ago for this same
purpose, and which proved their effic
iency in the Ohio floods, .the Cali
fornia earthquakes and the Bandon
fire, officers said.
Commander MacDonald announced

and entertainment free to all veter
