Cotton U a major crop in 16 state. Ethiopia la referred to In the Bible aa Cush. The Oregon Humane society desires that Shep of Butte Palls shall have I a resting place, and a monument, be side Bobby of Sllverton. who dld some years ago. Bobbjf waa the collie ! who, being lost in Indiana, madn hi way home to the Oregon town and established a record lor such restor ation. Shep waa the shepherd dog who gave his life a few days seo to rescue an Infant child from the blaz ing cottage of a southern Oregon homesteader. And both were dogs of such sensibility, snMtlv-ncss and courage as have endeared dona to their people, since ever, as legend tells, an ancwrtor of theirs sprang across the widening chasm to be with Father Adam and Mother Eve when they were driven into exile from Eden. The high and flawless courage of Shep. who paid the debt of lore with hla life, waa very exceptional but so is such heroic self-sacrifice among our own kind. And Bobby, with af fection aa his compass, such forti tude, faith and endurance as he dis played In the long return to Silver ton, are by no means commonplace among us. Considering the selfless devotion of aueh dogs as thes. It seems not so strange that Alexander, when he lost a dog that he had loved, caused a city with temples to be erected as the dog's memorial. And. In eclipse of Kipling's ballad of the last suttee, It Is told that a dog belonging to- one of Alexander's gen erals, who fell In battle on the plain of Corns, leaped Into the funeral pyre of his master and so perished. Myth, legend and history abound with atortea of dogs that manifested traits which In men we should de clare to be the hallmark of nobility. These dogs were lineal and spiritual kin to the Butte Falls shepnerd and 1 the Sllverton collie. The hero Ulysses, home at long laat from hla wander ings was gwted Joyously by an In firm and expiring dog that roised Itself from a dunghill. It had been his dog before he went away to the siege of Troy. It was still his dog and none remembered htm except this aged but loyal stavellng. By nil means let there be a monu ment to Shep of Butte Falls, so that in after year?, when people stand be fort It. reading the inscription, the atono will seem gently radiant with an Inner light, and the wonder, beauty and pathos of the light will make them, no doubt of it, better men and women because a good dog rest there.
