Climax of the weekly card, which Promoter Llllard figures will pack them in. will be furnished by Weed's adad Itallsn, Feta Belcastro and the Indian wonder boy from Oklahoma, frankie Clemens. Quite an upset occurred last week when Clemens, appearing here after an extended ab sence, failed to paralyze Marshall Car ter Into submission. It marked the first time In local history that Clem ens had missed with bis excruciating Indian paralyzer, but at that, it was the bell that saved Career from de feat. A clean wrestler, Clemens will be facing probably his toughest test lp Belcastro, who whscked Les Wolfe to a fsre-thee-well last Monday. Consensus Is that If Frankie can maneuver the sly and vlolous Pete Into his pet punlsher, the mstch will be over. ' To open the csrd, Impressarlo LU lard has billed Frankie Murdock, sn Upstanding American gentleman with Olen atone, who cares little about the traditional niceties of the mat game. In fact Stone, who appearod here about two years ago under the name of Billy Newman, la so dis interested that he was forced to switch his moniker recently to be able to ply his nefarious trade at all, be being suspended for Ufa some where or other because of extreme cruelty. , Following Mu.dock and Stone Into the arena will be ifsrllla Pogl. aflame with the revenge CfrtH,, and lies Wolfe, objwft of -ofl't Wsd. Wolfe, who la awnt un- uvcrct cttrcuisr to yet make a local showing, recently hammered Pogl unmercifully. Pickem, the world's greatest prognoatlcator of pigskin emhroglloa, modestly ateps forward today to re ceive the acclaim due him. Against odds only a bunch of crary football teams can produce, the oel ebrated I. Pickem knuckled down and batted out seven win ners In 13 trips to the crystal bail, and la Just ly proud. Until Saturday, the old percent age was on the verge of shrink ing Into some thing resembling Illy Hulea what you get for letting the govern ment take care of your do-re -ml. Now, however, the Pickem fellow can look with disdain upon those of you who flip ft coin or grab from a hat. To date. Including games of Saturday and Sunday, and strictly officially, the average Is a neat .628. That comes from correctly putting the finger on 19 battles out of 36 during the past three hectic weeks. To quickly get the bad news over with, here are the five encounters that spoiled I, Pickem from reaching the ultimate In prognostication. Southern California's Trojans. Instead of los ing to Ohio State. 14-0. defeated the Big Ten school, 13-13, Notre Pa me forgot to turn on the heat and was held to ft scoreless tie by Illinois In stead of rolling to four touchdowns. In the same category waa UCLA, which didn't send Washington, color ed back, Into enough action and was whacked by an underdog Stanford outfit, 13-7. The Bnilna were selected by Mr. Pickem to win. 10-8. Of course, I. Pickem missed fire on the Oregon State-Washington surprise, he stat ing that the Huskies would cop by 31-0, and lo and behold. It was 0-3 In favor of Joe Gray and Joe Wend lick of the Stlnermen. But, who dldnt miss on that one? (Quiet, Prank Perl, quiet.) This one remaining football game X. Pickem really U ashamed to mention. St. Mary's 43. Nevada 0. That, boys and girts, was Mr. Pick- em's big upset for the week. He prog nosticated the Wolf pack from Reno would up and trim the OaoU. 7-8 Oh well, maybe next week the crystal will not be so cloudy around the Bay district. Now for the good news. Medford high came through as expected, by an overwhelming win. Figured to trounce Crescent City with esse, the Ashland Or) wiles did It by only 8-0. However, the winner was picked. Oregon's Web foot did far better than was expected of them; 40-8 waa the count Instead of 13-13 as figured. California may really have another "wonder team" at that They defeated W. 8. C, 37-0. Instead of by 13-7. but again, the correct thought 1 there. Idaho was named a 6-0 winner over Utah and tt was 9-7; Santa Clara waa figured 31 14 over San Francisco and they dta It. 13-0: and lastly. Army wa named to win 14-7, and the actual count was 31-18. over Lou Little's Oolumbla club. And now that the above U done with, Mr. I. Pickem, great as he Is. wishes to doff his bonnet to a master. And, no kidding. You guys who have read this far. name somebody who honestly picked Oregon State over Washington. You can't do It, because It just waan't bcli dou. AUuck . If S.r V. Ill Hi 31 Step up Mr. Frank Perl and take a bow. Ladles and gentlemen, believe It or not, the aforementlonel citizen ac tually selected the Beavers of Oregon State to wallop the Huskies of mighty Washington. And Frank Perl didn't do It Just by tongue, either. He placed a perfectly good American half-dollar on the counter, and Mr. I Pickem almost tore off a stool getting like wise alongside. The master of them all didn't ask any odds, cither. It waa even up. Said Frank, "Washington will be over-confident." With that lengthy analysis of the respective power of the two teams, he took his pick. He also took I. Pickem. It's funny, though, that nobody else in the country could foresee that the Huskies might possibly be Just a lit- j tie over-confident. Displaying a terrific offensive punch, Coach Bill Bowerman 's Tigers roared to a 39-7 win over Roseburg In a Friday night game at Roseburg. Saturday afternoon, Ashland scored once to defeat Crescent City. 6-0, at Crescent City. To PolUh Passing The Black Tornado will this week prepare for the invasion of the pow erful Eureka high eleven at the sta dium. Fairly well satisfied with the performance of the ball club In the Roseburg battle, Coach Bowerman stated he would place special empha sis on polishing the team's offense and defense. .Medford threw only two passes In the game, one being com pleted and one Intercepted, and the bead man figures they should do better than that. Pitifully weak on pass defense against Hood River two weeks ago, the Tigers boasted a great defense against overheads with the Pirates. Roseburg, Bowerman said, attempted over 30 aerials and completed only five. Casualties were held to a mini mum. John Chllders, second string guard, received a sprained ankle for the most serious Injury. Jack Bow man, regular halfback, hurt his shoulder slightly, and Grow received bumped knee. Other than those, the Tigers came through In great shape. Ettlnger Scores First Medford scoring was distributed evenly In the Roseburg rout. Bobby Ettlnger broke through center in the first quarter for a 38-yard gallop to pay dirt for the Initial Tiger tally. After Roseburg tied the score, Eldon Grow received the klckoff and raced 80 yards to the goal line. Red Root, on a quarterback sneak, got Med ford's third touchdown, going 34 yards to the end cone. Bob Newman. Just before the half-time gun, got off for a 60-ysrd touchdown canter. In the third period, Jack Bowman reached scoring territory after power plays, and Rodney Stead scored the final slx-polnter after a blocked punt. IN TRAMPLING S.O.N.S. EUREKA. Calif.. Oct. 11. The Giants, nome- runned to death, 4 to 3, In the filth and final game of the world series yesterday at the Polo Grounds, woaua stuff the ballot boxes. If something like that Isn't done It will be difficult to generate much enthusiasm In the 1938 world series next October, when the Yankees, no doubt, will prepare to take another luckless National lesgue team apart Won Last Five. Twice before the Yankees reeled off three straight pennants before tapering off. They nave now been victorious in their lsst five world series appearances and won six alto- cether. which tops any otner ciud id baseball history. Up to this year the Yankees were tied with the Red Sox and Athletics, at five world cham. Dlonshlps each. They have now won 20 of their last 23 lnter-league games. Only the Giants have been able to give the Yankees any sort of an argument at all tn tne woria senea, and that debate hasn't lasted very long In two years. Maybe the Na tional league ought to consider break ing off relations entirely. In all seriousness today, however, baseball men generally agreed the Yankees aren't doing the game any good, and that some means of put ting graphite under the Juggernaut's wheels would be welcomed by every manager and owner In the two major leagues except Col.
