The cottagci, designed primarily aa part of a program to prevent the apread of disease, will be used by tuberculosis patients awaiting admit tance to the itato sanitarium. Jackson county has the distinction h.m the first Dlace west of the Mississippi river to adopt this mesne of combatting lupercun.... The Initial cottage, which Is a modification of the Burr cottage, used extensively In the southern states, was placed two weeks ago In the yard near the home of a woman tuberculosis patient. With the pa tient occupying the cottage, five oth ers In the home, some of them chil dren, aro spared the danger of Infec tion. One father In Jackson county last year unknowingly Infected five of his children. Two axe now In the state aanltarlum and one la awaiting entrance. The portable cottageB have been adopted by Jackson county to pre vent such unfortunate occurrences. The first to be placed In service was designed and the construction supcr Tised by Dr. O. I. Drummond. who recently resigned as county health Officer. Hospital Overcrowded Overcrowded conditions at the Oregon tuberculosis hospital Inspired his search for a means of temporary Isolation of tubercular persons. In 1036 Jackson county had between eight and ten persons awaiting ad mittance in the sanitarium. Blnce construction of the new pavilion the situation has Improved, but there Is still a waiting list. . . The flrat cottage waa financed by the Jackson County Public Health association, with Miss Mildred Carl ton as president, proceeds were ob tained from the sale of Christmas Seals and- through the Community CheBt. This volunteer organisation Is af filiated with the Oregon Tuberculosis association and has aa Its major activity the control of tuborculoels. The manual training department of the Medford high school, L. A. Mcntzer, Instructor, constructed the building. Cost was estimated at 1200. The second cottage, recently com pleted, was financed by the Klwanls elub. Jackson county health workers, who point with pride to their already low tuberculosis death rate, anticipate an even greater reduction through use of the cottages, pending sanitar ium care. The county's death rate In 1930 was 14.5 persons per 100.000. less thsn half that of the atate of Oregon and one-third that of the United States. In 1938 Jackson county's death rato from the disease was 43 persona per 100,000. Method Explained This great reduction waa accom plished through modern methods of case finding and constant supervision and Instruction of active cases. The active support of the health agencies by the community, la responsible for the admirable record. Mrs. Sadie Orr Dunbar, executive secretary of the Oregon Tuberculosis association, after viewing the cottage wrote her approval: "When we consider the long wait ing list at our two state tuberculosis hospitals and thus resllae the length of time which patients may have to wait for admission, I think Jnckson county has taken a very forward step "Your patients will be put under hospital regime weeks and even months before they are admitted to the hospital It may mean the sav ing of life.
