A Great Legionaire WE know nothing about the new commander of the Amer ican Legion who hails from Massachusetts. We only hope he proves aa good a one, as his predecessor, Harry Colmery of Kansas, and follows in that gentleman's foot steps. Not so long ago grave dangers threatened this powerful vet erans organization. Partisan politics reared its destructive head; extravagant bonus demands threatened serious disssen- sionj and there was genuine would gain control, and the semi-secret, strong arm organization. Fortunately wiser counsels did more to put the Legion on force for conatructive disinterested service to the country, than the leader who has just retired. IT was Colmery who put the quietus upon those who favored A militant. rnmnnipn nrrflinat. KtriWppB find lft-CA1fH "reds". under the aegis of 100 Americanism. Day in and day out he preached the danger and futility of strong arm methods, and the importance of restraint, tolerance and reason. Repeatedly he became the erties, and no one in the country has done more to clear the at mosphere, regarding the so-called subversive elements in this country, than Commander Colmery in his farewell address when he paid bis respects to Russian Communists on one hand, and the German Nazis on the other. I IE grouped them together, as they should be grouped, nei- ther have any legitimate place in this country, when they seek to undermine our democratic instititions, and have the unmitigated impudence to suggest, loyalty to some foreign country, in preference to their own. "A plague on both their houses I" The great service Com mander Colmery rendered was in mincing no words in mention ing the Nazis by name. A less courageous and more demagogic type would have singled out the "reds" and let it go at that. That would have oeen safe and easy. For there is no popular support for Russian communism in this country and to adopt such a course would have been clear sailing. But the Legion leader chose only aroused the members of his to the dangers of a wide-spread country; but he emphasized the insidious dangers that ANY FORM OF NAZISM, in this country represents, whether it raises the flag of the Swastika, or the Stars and Stripes. SiTO danger of the Legion ever going "red." Not much danger - of it ever going Nazi or Fascist, but at one timo the latter danger did exist. And it is conceivable the danger might again arise. If it ever does, men like Commander Colmery deserve the thanks of the country, for using their influence and exerting their leadersship at the psychological time to prepare the coun try for auoh an emergency, and make any such effort a failure before it starts. In the World wnr the Legion fought presumably to make the "world safe for democracy" and failed, for today through out the world democracy was never in greater danger. If Com mander Colmery 's example is followed, however, the Legion can have the satisfaction of contributing more than any other organization toward making the COUNTRY snfp for clmiomicy in times of peace I Lucky "PIRST Lady gives Nan kiss, as Rooscvells see Boise." Thus reads a two-column headline on the first page of today's Orcgonian. Mrs. Honeyman, is to be congratulated. That kiss may well bo the kiss of life politically to Portland's representative in the lower house of congress. The President's popularity has been waning of Inte, but not tho popularity of his energetic and kindly helpmate. Mrs. Roosevelt's head may not always be in the richt place, but hor heart is, and in politics hearts arc what count. ayffOREOVER popularity h1 the polls is often determined by ineidents like this which are of no moment in themselves, but are tremendous factors in building up good will. Many old timers in Southern Oregon will recall, how Bingcr Herman of Roseburg defeated all comers in the subsequent election, because he was lucky enough to have his picture taken with President Theodore Roosevelt, on the rear platform of his private car. TPIIK importance of such association of ideas, in practical pol- itics, accounts for the tremendous demand, for seats of honor in the Presidential entourage, as it passes, through the state of Oregon. We don't know what Mayor Mahoney of Klam ath Falls, would give to be in the shoes of (lovcrnor Martin or Senator McNary today, but we venture to say it would run into a large cut of his official salary. And we won't be surprised if Willis gets in the front row yet. Klamath's perennial candidate, is a resourceful gentleman, and has a way with hiin. . . OUT Mrs. Honeynian wins out anyway. The fact that she had been a Roosevelt bridesmaid, was one of the most effective talking points in the campaign last year, and now the fact that she and l'.leanor kirs when they meet, should remove all doubt as to the affectionate intimacy that exists between Multnomah's congressional representative and the "Roosevelt family." Of courso such purely private social relationships have noth ing to do with the qualifications of a candidate for office. But they have a heap to do with the way the totals stack up on the morning after. That ir why an official kiss here, an official snap-shot there, or a presidential hand-shake somewhere else are so eagerly sought after, particularly if they get in the newspapers. Of course a year or two hence the situation may be very dif ferent than it is today Sooner or later the political worm turns, the exai-t time no one can forsee. But sufficient unto the day is the smacker thereof, as far as our Nan is concerned. New style Snipe MARE ISLAND, Cel. Most states and prov inces have laws regulating the prac tice of medicine. defining practice aa the diagnosis or treatment ol human ailment, Injuries, etc.. es tablishing mini mum educational qualifications for persons who seek a license to en gage In practice. But here and there a numbei of persons who lack the educa tional qualifications required to ob tain a license, decide to demand rec ognition anyway. They organize, car ry on propaganda, maintain a lobby in the state or provincial legislature, assert that "pills and potions" are worthless or harmful and that all human ailments are caused by, let us say. wrong food combinations or the west wind. Presently the state or provincial legislature lets down the bars and admits the new kind of healers to practice regardless, and a soon as they are well broken in the new kind of healers gradually adopt antiseptics, anesthetics, ex ternal medicaments, serums, anti toxins, sedatives and presently they are prescribing as nearly as they can contrive to prescribe the same meas ures.
