PAOE TTTREB ELKS WILL GIVE PUBLIC PROGRAM T (Continued from Pag One.) tonight u one of the feature of the first day of the annual conven tion of the Oregon State Elks asso ciation. It will start at 7:00 o'clock Walter P. Meier of Seattle, former grand exalted ruler of the Elks lodge and official representative of the present grand exalted ruler, Charlv S. Hart, will be the principal speaker. Be will be introduced by C. E. Gates, . past exalted ruler of the Med ford lodge, who will act as chairman. ' George Feckham, following the march rendered by the Elks band will sing the Star Spangled Banner, . and will also lead the audience In the signing of America at the close of the program. A pledge of alle giance tb the flag will be given by the audience, led by J. P. Pllegel of the Medford lodge, and drill teams and organisations will mass their colors at either side of the band . stand. In case the weather is un J favorable, the program will be held n the Elks temple. Delegates Pour In Delegates from all parts of Oregon were today pouring Into Medford and registering at headquarters at the temple as the annual convention of the Oregon State Elks association moved into its first day of business sessions and hilarity, honest work and needed play. At one o'clock this afternoon, over 160 delegates had scrawled their names across the big book In Elks temple, and that was only a starter. At least 500, total, were expected to be on hand by tonight to start out afresh tomorrow 'morning and con tinue at top speed until the wlndup Sunday night. Of the' 17 state lodges belonging to the association, 15 were represent ed early this afternoon. The two others were expected at any time. One resolution was passed at the opening business session In the tem ple this morning. Introduced by Brother J. B. Ofner of Portland, It resolved, "that Oregon state Elks re sent all misrepresentation as to Crater lake and other Oregon scenery and urge all Elks to report further misstatement to the officers of this association." The resolution brought a. great cheer from the huge gather ing. Gates Gives Welcome The Rev. E. 8. Bartlam of Med ford gave the Invocation as the busi ness session opened. He was followed by C. E. ("Pop") Gates of Medford, past exalted ruler of the Medford lodge, who gaveUhe address of wel come. O. A. Neal of Portland, state Elks chaplain, responded to the. wel coming speech. Opening address of the convention was made by J. W. Flanagan of Marshfteld, president of the Oregon State Elks association. President Flanagan told of the rapid and successful growth of the state ansoclatlon, which now embraces al but six of Oregon's lodge. He commented on the excellent cooper ation received from member units, and stated that this convention look ed like the best of them all. Among the distinguished visiting Klka present this morning were Past Grand Exalted Ruler Walter P. Meier tft Seattle and Jack Allen of Bend and Harry B. Ruth of Eugene, dis trict deputies of Oregon. All state officers were either present -or ex pected at any time. Routine Business With the exception of the one res olution passed, all business thli morning was routine. The Important session will be held tomorrow, morn ing at fl a. m. Both the Medford and Astoria Elks bands, fully uniformed, were on hand and blazing away. A large delegation of Medford Elks met the southbound train this morning and . welcomed many ytsllng delegates. .The ritualistic contest,- with teams from several state lodges competing, Is being held In the temple - this afternoon.. The, winner will confer the degree on a huge group of can didates this evening. initiation At 8 P. M. At 8:00 o'clock tonight, the Med ford lodge will hold Its regular ses sion end candidates from the . local lodge and many other units over the state will be Initiated. Degree's will be conferred by the team win ning the ritualistic contest, now be ing held in the temple. Lady Elks will be entertained In Ashland at 6:00 o'clock this evening by the Ashland lsdles. Official business sessions . of the state association will be continued tomorrow morning at 0:00 o'clock in the temple, with election of state officers and resolutions taking up most of the time. At 1:00 p. m. tomorrow, a huge o&ravan of visiting delegates will leave Medford for Oregon caves under the auspices of the Grants Pass lodge. At 3:00 p. m., a golf tournament at the Rogue Valley Oolf club wlU oe held, with members from Medford and all state lodges competing for prizes. Pull . handicaps will be al lowed In the IB-hole medal play, end there will be awards for both the low gross and net scorers. In addition to many others. All Elks are Invited to enter the tourney. Days Of '49 Slated Saturday's program will be brought to a close with the hilarious "Days of '49" celebration In the Elks temple for all Elks and their ladles. There will be special entertainment fea tures as well as dancing. Sunday, final day of the conven tion, will open with another caravan, this time to Crater lake under aus pices of the Klamath Falls lodge, at 8:00 o'clock. The golf tournsment will be brought to a close during the morning, and trap shoot will be held at the Medford Gun club grounds. At 3:00 p. m, the grand picnic will be held at the Elks picnic ground on Rogue river. Five fights featuring tl.e cream of- CCC talent and two wrestling matches will highlight the athletic program At the picnic, and there will also be foot racing, broad Jumping end other entertainments. During the picnic, music will be furnished by bands from Medford, Astoria and other lodges, and by the Gay Nineties orchestra from Klamath Falls. - Wasserman Tests Urged For Pupils WASHINGTON. Sept. 24. ifpy Dr. R. A. Vanderlchr of the public health service said today recommendations have been made to Interested univer sities that new - students be given serologic tests for venereal diseases. The recommendations stipulate, he said, that confidential methods should be used and that discovery of the dis eases should not be used as a basis for refusing admission to a student. Dr. Vanderlehr said the amount of syphilis among college students is relatively small usually less than one percent, and In one university tested was as low as one-tenth of one percent.
