Spt. 17. (JP, A com mon dye. Congo red. was proposed today as the newest tool of medical science In the fight against cancer. Two New York City physicians. Dr. Isidore Arons and Dr. Boris Sokoloff. told the International Congress of Radiology that they had found that the dye materially slows down the growth of some types of cancer. And. in some cases It caused cancer growtha to be absorbed In experimental ani mals and enabled the natural disease-fighting mechanisms to control them. Has Many tes. Previously the dye hHd been found highly useful In controlling hemor rhages due to tuberculosis, pleurisy. ' cancer and ulcers. It has also been used successfully In the treatment of anemia. Now It has been found, the New Yorlt specialists said, that the dye apparently stimulates the activity of some of the blood cells which fight disease and the disease defense mech anisms of the spleen, lymph glands and bone marrow. In s series of experiments In mice, they transplanted a form of eanoer which la grown and used experiment ally In a number of laboratories. When It was planted under the skin injections of Congo red caused It to reduce 60 percent In size. However, when It was transplanted Into the skin Injections of the dye caused the cancer to be completely absorbed In 26 percent of the animals Infected. In the remainder the size of the can cer waa reduced 00 percent. Immunity Found. Going still further. Dr. Arons and Dr. Sokoloff re-infected the animals which had absorbed the cancerous growths and found that most of them had developed a complete Immunity to them. "We believe that resistance toward malignancy depends on factors which are different from those on which resistance to Infection Is based" and the dye apparently plays a highly Important role In the development of that resistance, they said. They suggested to the radiologists nseembled from 30 countries that Congo red can be used with great advantage by combining its use to stimulate the disease-resisting func tions of the body with x-ray and radium treatments. Can ' SaTe Arms, LK. A great many arms and legs can be saved from amputation. Dr. Gor don E. Richards of Toronto. Canada, told the congress, by correctly locat ing and diagnosing the difficult dis ease known aa giant cell tumors of the bones. These growths commonly occur after Injuries to the spine, he said and when located can be treated suc cessfully with radium and x-rays to make amputations unnecessary. (AP) The east ern Oregon grazing land problem, ob ject of a bitter dispute Involving the state land board and the so-called committee of nine appointed to study the situation, apparently was settled today when the committee reached agreement. Former U. S. Senator Robert N. Stanfleld of Baker and W. B. Snider, Paisley, submitted a compromise agreement to the board today where by no unit of grazing land, to be blocked by trading federal for state lands, shall be less than 10 sections or 6,400 acres. Stanfleld had contended that there should be about 15 or 16 large blocks, while Snider and th other seven members opposed him. arguing that there should be several hundred small blocks. Today's conciliatory agreement, which must be passed upon Monday by the land board, apparently favored the committee's recommendations for the smaller tracts. (Japnn's final reply to the strong British protest of the machine gun attack on sir Hughe Knatchbull Hugessen, British ambassador to China, has been withheld pending "further Investigation." The ambassa dor was gravely wounded last August 26 whn his car waa attacked by war planes identified as Japanese). Cooper Is Latest Hollywood Father HOLLYWOOD. Sept. 17.
