PAflTC SEVEN SNELL LARGE Will Run for Congress if Steiwer Retires Also Seen As Gubernatorial Aspirant if Martin Quits By P.U'L W. HARVEY. JR. SALEM. Sept. 17. JPr The 1038 political campaign, eight month away, centers today around the secre tary of state's office because the races for U. S. senator and governor depend largely upon what Secretary of State Earl Snell plana to do. Snell, young as far as politics Is concerned, has his eye on Senator Frederick stelwer's Job and will run If rumors that Steiwer plans to re tire are true. Snell also may run for governor tf Governor Martin does not run. Although a Republican. Snell has In dicated he will not run against the Democratic governor. May Skip Governorship. ' When Snell began his political ca reer a few years ago, he was said to have outlined his future In three wtepa secretary of state, governor and senator. But with Senator Steiwer reported to be considering retirement because of 111 health. Snell may skip the sec ond step If the time Is ripe next year for a Republican. However, if Steiwer and Martin both seek re-election, Snell may run for secretary of state again and wait four years for his big chance. Democrats and Republicans alike agree that the Ku Klux Klan Issue, raised by President Roosevelt's ap pointment of Senator Black to the supreme court, may give tne neyuu 11 cans lota of cannon fodder next election. And It may give Snell his chance. Martin Seen Candidate, There is every indication that Gov ernor Martin may run again, and Re publicans want Snell to run against Willis Mahoney of Klamath Falls, who Intends to run on the Demo cratic ticket for Steiwer'a post. The heads of the G. O. P. think Snell, who has managed his political career well by popularizing himself through traffic safety campaigns, would make a good race against Mahoney, who almost defeated Senator McNary last lection. Of Immediate political Importance, there Is the naming of a successor to Federal Judge Claude McCollocb, who must resign his Democratic state chairmanship before rising to the bench. He may call a meeting of the state Democratic central committee to name his successor, or may Just re sign and let Kadle St raver of Baker succeed him. Believe It or not, we're going back to the Indians. Former U. 8. Senator Robert N. etanileld of Baker, who appeared be fore the land board Monday to spon sor his plan to block eastern Oregon grazing lands, put it this way. The Taylor grazing act, which he said Is poorly administered, will put 11 eastern Oregon livestock men out of . business. Then eastern Oregon farmers will be ruined because they won't be able to sell to the stock men. Since western Oregon Is dependent upon eastern Oregon, the western Oregon civilization will decay. And we all will go back to the Indiana. But according to testimony of the stockmen at the meeting, the grazing lands are now so worthless that the Indians won't take them. The board of control la at Pen dleton today to hold a meeting at the eastern Oregon state hospital. Incidentally, there ts roundup at Pendleton. Hop producers have directed many appeals to Oovernor Martin to stop the "beer war" between the team sters and brewery workers unions, which has stopped the flow of east ern beer Into Washington and Ore gon. The producers say that eastern brewers threaten to boycott Oregon hops unless the squabble Is called off. Such a boycott would mean"ruln to the Oregon hop Industry because 99 percent of Its hops are shipped east. Temperature: 375. Time: 2 min utes, or to desired brownness. French Fried Onion Rings 2 Bermuda onicr- 2 cups milk Flour Salt 1. Peel onions and slice about Va inch thick. 2. Separate slices of onion ring and allow onions to soak in milk about 1 hour. 3. Bring fat to 385 on HIGH heat on the large surface unit. 4. Switch to LOW heat to maintain temperature, if nec essary. 5. Remove onions from milk and dredge with flour and salt. 6. Place in French fry basket. 7. Im merse basket in hot fat. 8. Keep the onion rings moving so that they will not fry together. 9. Remove basket from frying kettle and drain onions on brown paper. OTV-American Legion headquarters today an nounced a concerted campaign against the "junking" of men over 40 in the nation's employment scheme. The plans were disclosed by Robert a. Cooper, of Indlanola, Mlae-. chair man of the National Veterans' Em ployment committee, and will oe laid before the annual Legion convention here next week. The Legion will furnish "every em ployer In the United states" a book let showing "the economic value In terms of maturity of Judgment, abil ity, and dependability of World wai veterans."
