NEW YORK, Sept. 9. A few parting hot, as train time
nears. Beauty is vanquished over at Forest Hills, as the defend
ing champion, .Miss Alice Marble, loses to Dorothy Bundy,
daughter or May button Bundy who was U; 8. champion two
or three decades ago. As the best looking gal in the tournament
goes down, the stock of the ugliest duckling, "Babe Ruth"
Jadwiga, booms. Beauty is a
feminine ranks. It contributes to sell-consciousness and ham
pers concentration. Therefore we predict Miss Marble will
never stage a comeback as far as the U. S. title is concerned.
But there will be compensations for Alice, with Hollywood
luring and matrimony beckoning. She has an excellent sound
track voice too, they say.
Sorry to leave the Forest Hills tournament, few athletic
events in the country more interesting something doing every
minute, full of color, action and drama. There are many club
pools on the results. . At the present writing it looks like easy
money for those who have tickets on Budge and Jadwiga
particularly the former.
What a pair they would make, Donald and "Yah-Yah"!
Donald with his stringy red hair, hook nose and buck. teeth.
"Yah-Yah" with her hippo nose, loose mouth, and the physical
lure of a charging rhino. But heaven help the mixed double
team that would try to oppose them. And we aren't so sure
about thumbs down from Hollywood. What a couple for comic
relief in any slap-stick scenario.
Here's a tip for the neophyte
of those . players, of both sexes, who exert themselves the
LEAST. We don't mean in what they put on the ball, when
they get to it, we mean in getting to it. That's the acid test
of the good player. Take Budge and Yah-Yah for example.
When they hit the ball WHANG, they hit it! but observe
how easily they get to it. It is a combination of quick thinking,
agility and instinct, sensing where the return will be, and
being there, all set for it. And of course where the return
will be depends largely upon where the ball was placed origin
ally. In the final analysis it ull

It was near the noon hour, and many of the office boys and
stenographers from Wall Street, were sunning themselves on
the benches, amid the grave stones, most of them, girls and
boys, smoking. We noticed only one enjoying luncheon from
a paper bag lunch boxes may be verboten, or perhaps have
merely gone out of fashion. An admirable environment for
some impressive moralizing, though we are not quite certain
just what.
Here certainly the extreme contrasts that typify New York
meet. In that long canyon of a street, with the soaring sky
scrapers, reaching to the clouds, and below two elbowing lines
of humanity, one going in one direction, the other in the other
all in pursuit of tho Almighty dollar one sees the newest this
country has produced. And in Trinity church yard the
OLDEST. At the very entrance for example is a grave stone,
sunk flush with the grass, the inscription almost obliterated
by the years and the elements. "Here lies Anne May Davis,
tho infant daughter of Colonel and Mrs. Ilezikiah Davis, bom
August 11th, 1771 died January 2nd, 1772"!
A brief lifo that, birth and death in Oie short space of five
months, but commemorated at the head of Wall Street for all
time or as long as this present civilization lasts.
The striking feature of all the gravestones, were the short
spans of life recorded, most of them in their forties only one
in a pretty careful search, had passed the proverbial three
score nnd ten, and this was so extraordinary that the extreme
antiquity of the deceased was commented upon in the lSth
century epitaph.
Life was far simpler 200 years ago, there was less hurry,
less noise, less stress and strain, more space, more fresh air,
but also less comfort, less diversion, and less health. With Wall
Street a cow path, a pig sty and a "common" pump at the
northeast corner of Broadway, life from the standpoint not
of motor ears but disease was far more precarious in 1776. With
even the soda pop and salted peanuts iu germ proof containers.
New York City with all its faults, is undoubtedly TODAY, a
healthier place for homo sapiens than ever before in its history.

And within the church, pence and quiet, a sanctuaYy for
anyone who might seek rest or surcease, or wish merely to
take the load from head or feet. There were perhaps a doen
people, scattered among the comfortable pews, some bowed in
prayer, others reading the prayer book, and one young man
we observed had chosen that hallowed place to peruse the last
copy of Liberty magazine!

Uncle Sam will Join the Pacific
northwest states October 1 in a war
to stamp out "the narcotic weed
that makes criminals."
Federal co-operation in the fight
against the narcotic is authorized
by legislation enacted at the recent
session of congress.
The new law was sponsored by
federal officials .who said they had
traced many crimes to the use of
the weed and It requires federal li
censing of dealers and dispensers of
the narcotic.
In some areas of the Pacific north
west Washington, Oregon, Idaho
and Utah where there are concen
tration of alien laborers, state offi
cials have been troubled for years
In trying to curb use of the nar
cotic weed, peddled largely In the
form of cigarettes.
In some Instances peddle ra have
ben found operating among high
school children.
The new federal law prescribed a
124 annual tax on manufacturers.
