SEPTEMBER 5. 1937 PAGE NINE Loretta Young And Don Ameche In War Romance On Craterian s Screen T STARS "Broadway Melody of 1938" Here Wednesday Romance On Rialto Screen OnRoxyBill KAY FRANCIS AND QUARREL Latest of the new show season's entertainment opens a three-day run today et the Craterian Theater, with the showing of "Love Under Fire,' which stars Loretta Young and Don Ameche at the head of a notable east. Romance In modern, turbulent Spain, a fast-moving comedy drama of Intrigue and adventure. "Love Un der Plre" has Borreh Mtnevitch and hla Gang, harmonica wizards who scored a tremendous suoces in "One In a Million." In even more scenes than in that previous film In the clever arrangements which have made them the outstanding musical troupe of Its kind In the world. Also fea tured are Prances Drake. Walter Cat lett, John Carradlne, Slg Rumann, Harold Huber and Katherlne De Mllle. Replete with fast end furious fun u the two stars Ignore the spatter of shells about them, and the ex ploding of bombs In the distance, to pat, kiss and makeup, the picture has Miss Young as a frightened girl, fleeing madly about Europe, seeking to evade capture and imprisonment for a crime she mistakenly believes the haa committed. A Scotland Yard detective, Don Ameche, pursues her as a criminal until he discovers cer tain facts which clear up matters. Meanwhile, however, both detective and suspect find themselves In the midst of still greater trouble. The foreign city la bombed from the air, and troops move In on a rampage, blasting a bank. In search of certain Jewels of high value. An officer, learning that an English girl has bea ten them to the Jewels, arrests Lor etta, In endeavoring to escape from the country, both Loretta and Don find the pursuit hot and heavy. Their airplane la fired on. their car nar rowly escapes as a burning plane falls beside It, and then, apparently safe on a merchant ship, they are captur ed by a enemy gunboat. A turmoil of exciting events follows, finally brought to a satisfying climax that adds mora thrills to the earlier tu Hopyard Strike Ebbs EUGENE, Sept. 4. Sheriff O. A. Among the many stars of radio, stage and scree-n who combine their talents in the show are, Judy Garland. Robert Taylor, Eleanor Powell, Buddy Ebsen and Sophie Tucker. Drama Of Prison Life Opens Today On Rialto Screen Those who like their movie men rugged and strong plenty good If they're good, and plenty bod If they are so Inclined are due for a treat today, when "San Quentln." power ful melodrama opens at the Rialto Theater for a three-day run. On the good side the fans will see Pat O'Brien, which ought to be sat isfactory enough. He's the captain of the yard in San Quentln. On the bad side they'll have Humphery Bo gort and Joseph Sawyer as a couple of tough prisoners, plus big Barton MacLane as a crooked Jail official. But the picture Isn't altogether masculine. For sweetness and light there's that lovely red-headed lead ing woman, Ann Sheridan, as a San Francisco night-club singer with whom Pat falls in love, and who in cldently Is Bogart's sister. "San Quentln" Is far from being a gloomy picture, preview observers de clare, In spite of the fact that a lot of the action la behind the walls of the ancient penitentiary on the shore of the San Francisco bay. Others in the cast besides the men tioned Include Joseph King, James Robblns, Gordon. Oliver and hun dreds of extras. Guy Kibbee, one of Hollywood's ace comedians, and Cora Wither spoon, topnotch comedienne, combine their talents on the screen for the first time in a dramatic comedy, "The Big Shot," which plays as the added fea ture with "San Quentln." Gordon Jones and Dorothy Moore share the love Interest. "The Big Shot" Is based on the story of a small town family who suddenly find themselves rich. Kib bee and his daughter, Miss Moore, are perfectly contented, but the mother Insists on moving to the city where she plans an ambitious social career. There the family skeleton bobs tip with much hilarity to seriously com plicate her plans. KLAMATH FALLS, Sept. Sentences totalling twelve year Im prisonment and fines amounting to 130.000 may be imposed If Torrlo Is found guilty. (AP) Two officers and a bandit were killed, a third officer was wounded, and one bandit was captured tn a gun battle today near Medway, 15 miles south west of here. The shooting followed the 1,207 payroll robbery of a Springfield cafe proprietor, who was abducted from a city street about noon. The other gunmen escaped. Patrolman Martin Randolph, 38, and ohlef Deputy Sheriff Edward Furry, 46,' were killed. Patrolman Martin Donnelly was slightly wound ed In the furious exchange of shots.
