have figuratively
worked their fingers to the bone to
make this a really "big" event. That
they have been successful Is attested
by the fact that the tourney, at least
during the past two years, has been
the most Important In Oregon out
side the state meet, and one of the
finest In northern California north
of Sacramento.
At least 150 golfers from north.
south, east and west are expected to
enter this yesr. The 18-hole qualify
ing rounds will be shot off Friday
with .the match play In all flights
being staged Saturday, Sunday and
Monday. The 38-hole championship
finals will be played Monday. De
fending Champion Eddie Simmons
will sgaln be entered, aa will two
more of Medford's ace shotmakers
Leland Clark, Jr. and big Bob Ham
mond. Ashland will send Its brilliant
Hubert Bentley down for a crack at
the title, and many more stars from
other cities will pit their skill against
each other.
After the way the Egan memor
ial fountain dedication program
waa handled two weeks' ago, there
can be no doubt In anybody's
mlnfl that nothing will be left un
done hy those In charge toward
making this year's meeting, the
best or them all. And, that's Just
what local officials are figuring
on.
The athletic depression In north
west colleges Is over for good. When
the University of Montana was voted
back Into the Pacific coast confer
ence, northern division, baske'tbsll
race .the five big universities admit
ted once and for all that the wolf,
that more than sniffed at their back
doors for several years, had departed
for better hunting grounds.
Montana, which never turned out
such hot quintets anyway, was drop
ped from the northern division cir
cuit about four years ago. It was
plenty slim pickings for all the
schools along about then, and the
long trip to Missoula didn't help fin
ancial mattera any. Montana never
drew many paying customers even at
home, and while on the road, played
to even more meagre crowds. Last
year, all northern division schools
showed sharp attendance Increases,
which no doubt accounts for the re
admlttance of the Grizzlies.
So this coming winter. It' will be a
six-cornered battle for the title and
right to meet the southern division
winner for the coast championship.
GOOD
2 YEARS OLD
In addition to Montana, there will be
Oregon, Oregon Bute, Washington,
Washington State and Idaho. Coach
es and graduate managers, at the
meeting the other day, adopted a 30
game schedule for each 'outfit. Each
team will meet the other four tlmea,
twloe away and twice at home. How
ard Hobson, Web foot mentor, fought
for a consolidation of the northern
and southern division Into one big
conference. He was out-voted, how
ever, so the age-old situation of an
annual playoff aeries between the
two division winners will be In ef
fect for at least one more year.
Poor Max Schmeling. Aa a result
of that 16-round decision affair In
New Tprk Monday night, by the time
the German gets another chance to
blast the block off Champion Joe
Loula. he will be so old and decrepit
they'll have to wheel him Into the
ring. If Louis had knocked Farr kick
ing, or even beaten him decisively,
there would have been a good chance
that Schmeling and the champ would
have tangled soon. But now. because
of that close, tough fight Monday, Its
a 100 to 1 shot the Brown Bomber's
next tight will be against the Iden
tical Jimmy Farr. Promoter Mike Ja
cobs hardly let the booing over the
decision calm down until he started
talking about a rematch next spring
that would draw a. cool million
smackers. So, paste this In your bon
netLouis and Schmeling will not
meet In mortal combat until Loula
and Farr have settled their argu
ment. Remember, we told you so.
Grappling fans who remember
Roland Warren, the dashing lit
tle Copco employe from. Klamath
Falls who used to make middle
weight circles hum around south
ern Oregon, will be Interested In
learning that he has been doing
the same In Great Falls, Montana
and vlrlnlty with occasional trips
Into Canada. Ruel Rians, local
ropco employe and a close friend
of warren, received a long letter
from the wrestler the other day.
The flashy middleweight wrote
that he was getting ready to take
off for Mexico and Cuba on a
probable several months trip.
Included In his Itinerary will be
stops In Santa Fe. N. M., Albuquerque
and 23 Paso. Texas, before going di
rectly to Mexico City, where he ex
pects to remain for two months. From
there he will return and work In
Texas for several months, then leave
for Cuba.
Warren wrote that Sailor Dick Trout
wrestled In the Montana territory
previous to his returning to Medford
a Week sgo, but wsa a little too
weighty for the mlddlewelghts In that
circuit. He said that Trout left Great
Falls a week ego last Sunday and
would be forced to drive all night
