MAGIC OF SCIENCE USED TO PROVIDE SAFE MOTORCARS All Parts Checked By Auto matic Devices For Per fection Of Materials Workers Also Protected. By WILEY MALONKY (U. P. Staff Correspond on t.) DETROIT, Aug. 27. (UP) All the magic of modern science is drawn upon today to provide a scion tlflo gantlet through which an automo bile and Its parts must pana before being delivered, to the consumer. Electric eyes, electric cars, spccto grnphs, thermostats and hundreds of other gadgets are employed to pro mote efficiency, to teat materia la and to safeguard workers against acci dent. Electric eyes, for example, are uaed at various points on most assembly lines. At the Plymouth plant a spec tacular application of the electric cell Is .used at the point where radiators and steering wheels are aeoured to the chassis. Automatic Slop. The wheels and radiators are mov ed to the line by an overhead con veyor. The operation la so timed that If the radiator Is not removed from the conveyor, the line stops. When the radiator Is removed the In tercepted beam of light again shines upon the cell, the electric circuit Is closed and the line moves on. The same principle la employed as a safety measure. A curtain of light Is cast In front of a particularly dan gerous machine. If the workman's hand or any part of his body passes through the light screen, the ma chine automatically stops. Electric eye are also used for auto matic inspection of parts for flaws, cracks or checks In bearings; for dis coloration and other flaws in fabrics and for automatic control of spray painting. They are used for count . lng parts and for controlling resist ance heaters for treatment of metals. Ring Shows Errors The "electric ear," or what to the ordinary layman passes as a radio tubs. Is used to amplify the feeble current changes coming from micro phones or electric vibration pickups. This gadget Is used to inspect bear bigs, rear axle, transmission assem ble or springs for Internal flaws and cracks. The mistake are determined by the burr or "ring" after the parts have been struck like a bell. Thousands of suoh sclent! Mo and endurance tests are run each day of manufacture tn America's factories to insure for the eventual owner that his ear oan stand up under punish ment far beyond the requirement of normal use. Factory engineers call it the "saf ety factor." EAGLE POINT, Aug. 27 8pl.)
