about 120 young men in key posi
tions owe their appointments to
Frankfurter.
Bom In Vienna.
. Frankfurter was 12 yeara old and
unable to speak a single word of
English when bis parents brought
him to this country In 1804. Today
he la considered an adept conversa
tionalist, speaking perfect English
with the exception of an occasional
thick "s.".
Poverty stalked Frankfurter's Jew

During the war, Secretary Newton
Baker called Frankfurter Into his

him into close and friendly contact
with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then
assistant secretary of navy. Frank
furter also served during this period

the war labor policies board.
Returning to Harvard, Frankfurter
began a career which endeared him
to liberals. He oppoaed the execu
tion of Sacco and Vanzottl. headed
a commission which demanded the
release of Thomas J. Moonqy, and
advocated legislation favoring labor

In 1938, Frankfurter hesrflly en
dorsed the candidacy of Gov. Alfred
B. Smith of New York for president,
and once again worked hand In hand
with Mr. Roosevelt, then still an In
timate of Smith.
