Grass Fire The fire department's chemical crew was called yesterday afternoon to put out a grass blaze on Groveland avenue near the Valley school. No damage was done. Building Progressing Work Is pro gressing on the new Church of the Nazarene at Holly and First streets, response of the congregation and others permitting the building to continue on a pay-as-you-go basis, It was announced today. Next week 10.000 pounds of structural steel ma terial will be swung Into place. The steel will bridge a 32-foot span which will permit the combining of two auditoriums without obstructions. ... Chimney Fire Nominal damage was done late yesterday afternoon by small fire blamed on a defective chimney serving the Flynn Electric Service store at 131 West Main street and the adjoining Carl Y. Tengwald real estate agency. A paper fire set In the Tengwald agency stove Ignited laths around the chimney in the elec tric company store, the fire depart ment said. Some of the laths and plaster were removed by a chemical crew to put the blaze out. v. nf r. (AP) Pendleton was unanimously selected as the 1938 convention city, the date to be selected to avoid conflict with the round up. ALBANY, Ore., Aug. 13. (AP) The American Legion Americanization program Is the "most stabilizing In fluence lor the perpetuation of dem ocracy." Stephen F. Chad wick, Se attle, national Americanism director, told the convention of the Oregon department today. Chad wick, candidate for national commander, was one of a series of Legion speakers who urged safeguards for the American form of government against Invasion of "Isms" from abroad. There Is a divine plan in what we are doing, trying to do." he said. "When we fought in Europe we learned we had the best nation on earth with the best form of govern ment. We don't want our teachers to preach lilies on foreign fields is best." Hits "Crackpots" He described the young pioneer or ganizers as 'crackpots" for exalting Stalin and Lenin. He attacked op ponents of military training In col leges and said it was "a duty to know something about the defenses of the country." "This country cannot endure un less democracy Is a preferable form of government as opposed to fascism and communism." he said. 5. L. Hanson, commander of Span ish War Veterans, pledged support for any Legion program placed before the public. He urged a united ef fort establishing Armistice Day as a national holiday. Three Fatalities In Industry Week SALEM, Ore., Aug. 13. (AP) Three fatalities and 1078 accidents were reported during the week ending yes terday to the state Industrial acci dent commission. Fatalities were Everett Stevens, Brownsville, helping truck man. In jured July 22 at Albany: William H. FATHER IS FREED CHICAQO, Aug. 13. (UP) A fel ony court Judge today freed John M. Hayes, 33, wealthy Mahwah, N. J., sportsman, of charges that he "stole" his own baoy daughter. Judge George Weiss ordered the charges dismissed and told Hayes he was at liberty to continue his Interrupted trip to the Bronx Zoo with his 29-month-old daughter, Patricia Ann The state's attorney's office said it had received no request for Hayes' extradition Hayes, who described himself as a chicken fancier, was arrested as he stepped from an eastbound airliner with Patricia Ann In his arms two weekB ago His mother-in-law, Mrs. Charlotte Pendergast of San Francisco, filed the charges against Hayes because. she said, he took the baby from her on a ruse. "I Just told her I wanted to take Patricia Ann to visit the zoo," Hayes said, "but I didn't say it was the Bronx zoo I meant," Hayes' wife died In California Just after beginning divorce proceedings.
