Two mmliture prospectors, Walter
Offenbacher. 10, and hi ooualn, Evli
Offenbacher. 0, took to the hills near
the former's home In bo arch of gold
recently, and discovered not their
fortunes, but a rattlesnake.
At a spring where they went to do
ttielr panning, lay a huge rattler
with 13 rattles and a button, and
which they estimated to be three fet
long. With their miners shovels
they quickly administered death to
the reptile, and chopped oft his rat
tles as a souvenir.
As a sequel to this Incident.
Walter's father, Lance Offenbacher,
killed a large rattler at his ranch A
few days later, after having acciden
tally stepped on the snake, which bit
at the toe of his shoe.
NEW 'MASS JOB HUNT
SALEM, Aug. 12. ( AP) T. M.
Phillips, Portland, secretary of the
Workers Alliance, made an appoint
ment today with Governor Martin for
4 p. m. tomorrow, when he said WPA
workers who have been forced off
relief would come here on a "mass
job hunt."
The workers originally were sched
uled to come here yesterday.
Governor Martin said he would
have a list of 5.64 Jobs available for
the 3,000 workers who have been
forced off the rolls by the govern
ment's curtailment of relief activities.
Eugene Bank Has
Record Deposits
EUGENE, Ore.. Aug. IS. ( AP) An
all-time high mark in deposits and
total resources was announced to
day by the First National bauk in a
statement which estimated the total
resources of the bank at 7,667,&92.
Deposits were set at $7,120,573,
while current loans were believed to
exceed 91,664,791, almost equaling
the 1929 peak.
DANISH SHIP SINKS
FOLLOWING COLLISION
HEW YORK, Aug. 13. (P) The Ra
dio Marine Corporation of America
reported today the Danish freighter
Maine sank at 9:49 a. m. (EDT) after
the vessel had been abandoned fol
lowing a collision with the Canadian
Pacific steamer Duchess of Atboll
which wa standing tiy.

TULSA. (UP) Clyde Pool has
lost faith In turtle nature. In April
he set out a dozen tomato plants of
the small preserving variety. To guard
them from the bugs, he tethered a
snapping turtle among the plants.
The turtle ate the tniects until the
tomatoes ripened. Then he ate the
tomatoes.

The senate side-tracked the Wagner
Van Nuya antl-lynchlng bill today
until next session under a resolution
giving it preferred legislative status
at that time.
Under an agreement between the
friends and foes of the bill, the sen
ate, without a record rote, adopted
a resolution making the antl-lynchlng
bill a "special order" of busi
ness at the next session of congress
Immediately after consideration of
crop control legislation.

day about 300 men have been laid
off under an economy program un

Kola peninsula to study the meth
ods of artificial pearl formation.
Last summer an expedition found
about 3.000,000 pearl-oysters In tha
rivers of the Kola peninsula.
As is known, an irritation by an
alien body causes the mollusk
to emit mother-of-pearl, which coats
this alien body, forming a pearl cap
sule around it. With this In mind,
the expedition conducted Interesting
experiments. Several hundred pearl
oysters were caught, and their shells
opened. A small shot was introduced
into the body of each oollusk which
was then thrown Into the river.

AKRON. O. (UP)--In two yesrs as
a gasoline station attendant, Walter
Thompson has dissuaded ten persons
from suicide.
Thompson's station Is at the end
of a bridge chosen often by persons
as a place to end their livas. When
he sees someone ready to Jump, he
rushes out and persuades him there
Is something to live for.
"There's something In the way de
spondent people look," Thompson

ease at his home today after a long
illness. He had been sports editor of
