Cm Mtu Ttidum vtm uu, Advertising RaprsMntatlvae Editorial Correspondence LAUDERDALE LAKE, Winconnin, Aug. 8. It'i an ill wind that blows no one good. Motored up here from Roclcford yes terday to spend the week-end and get away from the heat. Other member of the family were to drive up today for a family dinner at the shack. A wind started up during the night, followed by a rain, and before breakfast this morning a phone from Rockford declared the trip off, raining dogs and cats down there. Hard on the week-end at the lake, but fine and dandy for the Rockford friends, who live on a farm, and because of the drought feared they would lose the corn crop at over a dollar a bushel. The downpour will be a life saver. Lewi than half an inch of rain during July, and the corn was beginning to wilt. A good hay and oats crop, wheat also harvested (over a dollar a bushel) and now the corn safe, looks like a big year. But when we get back there will be some fly in the ointment. Never knew it to fail yet. A few years ago, agriculture was out the only thing to do was to quit, and let the property go for taxes. At the prices then prevailing, the gasoline bill couldn't be met. Then Roosevelt came in with bis farm relief program, and the sinking Bhip was salvaged, for the time being. Now the prices for farm products are what everyone dreamed of four years ago and were so sure would never return. But on our arrival the other day we learned the price of oats' had dropped from 60 cents to 30, and the corn crop would be a total loss. Now the corn is saved and everyone says oats can be held until the price comes back, Chicano at the time of the harvest). But there will be a nole somewhere in the doughnut. it and nothing else. They have miles of the bread line yet, but they been anything but "ru.ned." Nor anything out IWc Republicans, who year in year out vote the Q. O..P. ticket straight. The newspaper representative from Oregon is some thing considerably worse than a pariah, for in the last election they have been told, he supported Roosevelt. They can't believe it and refuse to talk about it. And we have a pretty good ointment will be. Something like this, wBst gooa are nign prices anyway, with taxes what they are, and the budget not balanced. And porterhouse steak at 75 cents per pound ! The more money you make the less you have in the bank. With two years more to go on, nothing can prevent F. D. R. from achieving his life long ambition, which is to destroy this once glorious democracy of ours and (And porterhouse steak at 73 THAT!) "All ritrht, all rieht 1" The turned, the other side now has its inning, and it's up to the New Dealers to sit tight, look at their hole csrd snd demon strate they can TAKE it. The pendulum swung far in one direction, it will swing as far in the other. When the tumult and the shoutine dies, it will come to rest somewhere between the two extremes and the net social snd economic progress, Heat was not the onlv thing was the motor traffic. Main street was once the Euclid Avenue of Rockford, nice comfortable homes, on the river bank, green lawns front and back, and towering elms forming a shsdy green arch over the street. Main It's now merely No. 2 on the traffic between Dixon, Illinois snd Beloit, Wisconsin. Driving forth from 831 is like running the gauntlet. One often has to halt the ear at the curb for five or ten minutes to find a break in the endless traffic. And when the motor cars thin out about midnight the trucks begin, and keep it up until daylight. No two ways about it, the gasoline engine has ruined Main street. And it has ruined Lauderdale lake as far as we are con cerned, Years ago it was a secluded little string of three lakes, five miles from a railroad, with heavily wooded banks, and fine fishing for pickerel, pike and black bass. Now it is just one of the minor Chicago lake resorts, with almost as many gas engines functioning on the water, as in the Windy City loop. Even the fishing scows have putt-putts. A row boat is as rare as a horse and buggy on Michigan avenue. The fishing is no more, except early in the spring and lata in the fall, and this putt-putting goes on from morning till night, the only iuiet period being from about two a. m. until daylight. (OK have vour wav, it isn't the noise it's merely old age creeping on us I) , , Years ago there wss a little lake south of here known as (loose lake. There wasn't, a house on it or even a farm near it. Kull of weeds and lily pads with low bare shores, we sometimes went down there to caieh ruck bass and perch, and how we caught them I But even the Sunday crowds in those days passed it up. Now thanks to the gas engine and concrete high ways. Cioose lake if you please is a SUMMER RESORT. There are cottages on the flat chested shores, and one of them on ail old Indian mound, approximately fifteen feet above the lake level, sports an elaborate sign which reads "Isle of View!
