of bis trip to Europea on the Hai
nan superllner. "Roma"; of his visit
to the island of Madeira, with its
picturesque red-roofed white-washed
houses and unique bullock carts, and
his stops at such ports as Casablanca
In northern Africa, Algiers and Gib
raltar. On the voyage to the Rotary con
clave, the Roma passed through
waters affected by the Spanish revo

hospitality of Nice, famous tourist

ceptions and other entertainment fea.
tures filled the strenuous convention

slightly to pay for the additional
bookkeeping Involved. The change
was made in anticipation of the
prohibition of the machines, it being
the understanding that if the de
vices were ruled out no reimburse
ment would be sought of the city
for the unused portion of the quar
terly fees.
At a recent council meeting It was
stated that unconflrmable rumors
placed the annual gross receipts
from the 88 plnball machines 189,
000. On Percentage.
Majority of the machines In Jack
son county are operated on a per
centage basis between the distributor
and the owner of the establishment.
It is estimated there are 500 ma
chines In the county. Some owners
of establishments own their own
machined and garner the entire
profits. Some places have as high
as 10 machines. They are to be
found In rural area stores, some ser
vice stations, restaurants, pool halls,
beer parlors, cigar stores, soft-drink
establishments, hotel lobbies, and
summer resorts.
The devices have been widely dis
tributed, and enjoyed a heavy play
from all classes, and all ages. Many
small business concerns claimed the
profits paid the rent, and enabled
them to weather the depression. The
machines seldom lost money and if
one did, It was replaced.
