CRATERS DEFEAT PIRATES 10 TO 5 TO STAYJN RACE Locals Take Early Lead With Heavy Slugging Hughes Relieves Erickson In Sixth Lewis Homes Prank ("Donny") Donovan belted three doublet and a triple and Oleic Lewis craahetf a home run to give young Ray Erlckaon, Medford right- bander, bis first southern Oregon league victory of the year against Roaeburg yesterday at the high school field. The score was 10-5. The encounter saw the Craters retain gambling chance at the second-half pennant while the Pirates were drop ping their fifth straight to sink deep into the circuit cellar. Although slaying the Jinx tna bad dogged him since the season opened, Erickson was none too ef fective. Ha tolled five Innings and waa touclied for that many runs and eight hits before Manager Mikci BaMkovlck. taking no chancs, sent Jack Hughes to the mouni tn the sixth Inning. In a great exhibition, Hughes wheeled his hlgn hard one past four Pirate batters for the third strike, allowed only one hit ana no runs the remainder of the game. Craters Hrore Early. Erickson showed signs of weaken ing In the fifth Inning when Rose burg bunched five elnglea for three runs, after scoring twice In the sec ond. Terrific batting by his team mates, however, had accounted for nine tallica In the second, third ana fourth, and Erickson left the game with the score 9-6 In his favor With Hughes showing hla old-time form, the Craters coasted In, adding another marker In the eighth for good measure. The Craters lost little time In get. ting to the side-arm fast ball ana curve of Manager George Barr ot the Pirates. They tallied four times In the second, with Erickson. hlnueli driving In the first two. Sakraida singled to left, George Glttcen drew a walk, and both advanced a base Acheson was being thrown out. Erick son then dropped a Texas league single over short top scoring Sakraidu and Gltsen. Lewis Homes. Dick Lewis, next up. found an In side fast ball to his liking and whammed a tremendous drive down the left field foul line. It landed far pant the outfielder and only a few feet In fair territory, and Lewis made the complete circuit behind Erickson. Four safeties In the third Inning produced three more runs. Donovan tripled down the third base line and spiked the plate when Hofiard dropped a "bleeder" double Into right. Bob Smith singled off First Baseman Mardin's chest. Hoffnro going to third. Smith stole second and they both scored when Run Acheson singled sharply to center field. Roaeburg got Its first two mns in their half of the third frame as tho Crater Infield momentarily crack ed wide open. Domenlco nnd Barr both reached first base when Rick ert booted their ground balls. Hill hit to Donovan, the latter tagging out Domenlco going Into third, ana Hill reached first on the flelcers choice. Robertson smashed one at Smith who started a reverse double play that didn't pan out. He threw to Lewis at second, forcing Hill, but the shortstop's return throw wa wild and Barr scored while Roberteon went to second. Shtnn then singled to right, scoring Robert win. Dick Sakralda took Ooffa long fly to end the Inning. Two More In Fourth. With the score 7-3. the Craters tallied twice more in the fourth to insure victory. Lewis, first up, reach ed first on an Infield error. Rlckert whipped a red-hot single Into cen terfold that skidded between Bhlnn's legs and enabled Lewis to race home Rlckert pulled up at third, and after Donovan had popped out. Hof- fard alngled hotly to center ft eld scoring Rlckert. Roaeburg tried desperately to get in the hall gnme In the fifth. Deme "Everybody's Talking "Oh, fireman! SEAL Beer!" ffiillliB HOW THEY? Hill, Robertson, Goff and Mar din all belted singles for a total ot three runs, but the outburst went for naught. Jack Hughes took over In the next stanza, and from then on out the Pirates were completely at his mercy. A walk to Hughes, two force plays and Donovan's third two-base hit of the afternoon accounted for the tenth and final Medford tally in the eighth Inning. Good Support. Although the Crater Infield com mitted four errors, It gave E'lckson and Hughes some sensational sup port. The Lewis to Rlckert to Smith double play combination clicked twice to relieve pressure on Erick son. Sakralda. in centerfleld. also hauled down two dangerous looking drives.
